Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Job Description
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla, Missouri is seeking outstanding applicants for a tenure-track Aerospace Engineering faculty position open at the assistant professor rank. Applicants are sought with a priority on those with expertise in Aerospace Materials and Structures. Other candidates with expertise in one of the program's research thrust areas of Hypersonics, Intelligent and Autonomous Systems for Aerial and/or Space Vehicles, Flight Dynamics and Control, Space Systems, and Propulsion are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will demonstrate alignment with S&T's multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator research centers and programs, particularly the Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, the Intelligent Systems Center, the Center for Research in Energy and the Environment, and the four centers of the newly formed Kummer Institute. The Kummer Institute (https://kummerinstitute.mst.edu) was recently established through a $300 million gift that promises to transform Missouri S&T by cultivating leadership and technological innovation, nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset, fostering expansion of academic-industry partnerships to address the emerging needs of industry, and creating economic growth for the region, state and nation. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is the largest department on campus, with both programs each being the largest in Missouri. It has a long-established record of excellence in research, with five junior faculty having received CAREER and DoD Young Investigator awards in the last ten years. Several Ph.D. students have received prestigious fellowships from NASA, NSF, and DoD. The department is situated in a state-of-the-art 145,000 ft2 facility and has 24 internationally recognized tenured/tenure-track faculty, 7 teaching faculty, 10 staff members, over 200 graduate students (including 90 Ph.D. students), over 1,400 undergraduate students, and over 12,000 living alumni. Applicants should have demonstrated excellence in research and provide evidence of potential for excellence in (a) establishing a strong, externally funded research program, (b) high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, (c) service in the applicant's professional community and our institution, and (d) increasing the diversity of the student body and faculty. Qualified candidates will possess a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field.
