Summary

Dispenses controlled substances from the narcotic vault and additives for IV and irrigating solutions, types labels, prepares and files charge slips and performs other related duties.

Job Duties

  • Prepares large volume IV solutions and piggybacks, using sterile technique.
  • Assists in the design of and accurate preparation of floor stock specialty kits.
  • Assists in training of all new staff and monitoring progress to ensure continuity of workflow and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Collects, organizes, and evaluates information for direct patient care, medication use review, and departmental management.
  • Receives, files, and dispenses employee prescriptions according to standard operating procedures under Pharmacist supervision.
  • Ensures that medical orders are retrieved from Nursing Units according to Pharmacy policies.
  • Ensures that STAT and missing patient medication orders are received, reviewed, and filled as stated in standard operating procedure.
  • Maintains adequate stock levels, rotates stock, checks for proper dating.
  • Performs checks of refrigerator temperatures, and records data according to Pharmacy standard operating procedure.
  • Performs bulk packaging of meds to Unit Dose using the PAC-MED machine, subsequently checked by a pharmacist.
  • Performs monthly nursing station inspections and pharmacy department inspections.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 2 years in related field.
  • Knowledgeable and familiar with new concepts, (i.e., chemotherapy, new drugs, generic as well as trade names, drug conversions and pharmacy math).
  • CPhT - Certified Pharmacy Technician - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
