Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department's primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 30 Tenured-Tenure Track / 7 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 3 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 120 Adjuncts, 19 EHRA Non-Faculty, 15 Postdocs, 34 SHRA (Staff), 44 SHRA Temporary and 202 Students.The department's operating budget is 27 million a year.
Position Summary
The goal of the UNC Department of Epidemiology's Cardiovascular Epidemiology program area is to advance population wellness and health equity through innovative and impactful research in the field of cardiovascular epidemiology. A parallel goal is the training of qualified scientists for a diverse and multidisciplinary workforce capable of addressing local, national, and global challenges in cardiovascular health. Currently the Cardiovascular Epidemiology program area includes 13 faculty, 5 research staff, and >20 predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows. This large and diverse group is supported by over 20 federal, foundation, and industry research awards spanning different mechanisms and topical areas.

The Lead Projects Manager will directly manage research efforts of eight Cardiovascular Epidemiology Program faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and collaborating institutions. The position will involve effectively organizing, guiding, and implementing the management of the Program's large portfolio of research project grants, contracts, training programs, and personnel. To that end, the Lead Projects Manager will serve as the liaison between the Cardiovascular Program, the Department of Epidemiology, and extra-mural teams; lead the development, regular review, and revision of materials, tools and procedures that support grant activities; manage timelines and workloads related to research project performance, progress reports, award implementation, monitoring and reporting; ensure adherence to research policies within the Program; facilitate the development of new project grants and contracts, renewals, modifications, and terminations; oversee research project budgets and allocation of faculty/staff effort across research projects; coordinate research projects, training programs, and trainees; and train, monitor, and supervise other administrative / research staff and students.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The successful candidate will have at least five years of experience in administering and managing complex research projects at a higher education institution or research center. The individual must have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, flexibility, and a problem-solving attitude. The successful candidate will have a clear sense of positive, productive collaboration and strategic partnerships.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
-Experience working on complex epidemiologic research or public health projects is highly desirable.-Experience managing large and complex grant portfolios highly desirable.-Experience interacting with a central research office in a university setting is highly desirable.-Experience working with the National Institutes of Health ( NIH) as a research sponsor highly desirable.
