The Hot Fuels Examination Facility is (HFEF) is Idaho National Laboratory's flagship facility for conducting post-irradiation examinations of nuclear fuels and materials, boasting the largest inert atmosphere hot cell dedicated to nuclear materials research in the United States. The facility plays an essential role in the research and development of nuclear fuels, providing insights into their behavior under various conditions, including simulated accidents. The capabilities of HFEF, such as its large hot cells, numerous workstations, and extensive array of instruments, allow researchers to safely handle and analyze highly radioactive materials. The presence of a reactor within the facility provides the ability to produce high-resolution images using neutrons, allowing for detailed investigation into the structures and properties of nuclear materials. HFEF capabilities are complemented by state-of-the-art material science techniques hosted at the Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL) next door, providing researchers with the most comprehensive portfolio of PIE techniques to examine irradiated nuclear fuels.

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Post-Irradiation Examination Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in our Fuels Post-Irradiation Examination department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex facility with every Friday off.



  • Engage with the ongoing research development activities for assigned nuclear and radiological facility at INL.
  • Provide analysis and evaluation of data from experiments on different fuel and cladding concepts. Produce results by fulfilling and exceeding expectations and look for opportunities to enrich experience and knowledge.
  • Maintain familiarity with scientific literature to set the foundation of new research and critically interpret existing data and theories.
  • Builds and maintains productive, collaborative relationship with mentors, INL program leadership, and other collaborators to assess the performance of nuclear fuels and cladding through execution of post-irradiation examinations.
  • Collaborate with other INL PIE scientists and modeling experts to expand the understanding and application of PIE experiments to facilitate the shortening of the nuclear fuel cycle.
  • Provide insight on future instrument needs of INL PIE examinations.
  • Lead presentations and publications or contribute to publication of results in internal reports and in the open literature.

Qualifications


  • PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years.



  • Background in nuclear engineering, or material science or related disciplines.



  • Familiarity with either advanced reactor fuels (e.g., metallic fuels) or light water reactor fuels performance.



  • Familiarity with material characterization techniques (e.g., gamma scanning, advanced microscopy or micro-chemical analyses).
