Description

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in marine coastal geology to conduct innovative research on coastal processes and their response to climate change, with particular emphasis on shoreline evolution, beaches, barrier islands, estuaries, and shelf dynamics. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a field and laboratory program with the potential to integrate models, complement existing SoMAS climate and oceanographic expertise, and develop strategies to improve resiliency and sustain regional coastlines. The candidate will be expected to pursue and secure external funding from agencies such as NOAA, NSF, FEMA, USGS, ACE and other relevant sources in order to establish and sustain an independent externally funded research program to develop and lead research projects that contribute to coastal protection strategies and improve coastal resiliency.

The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to teaching classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentoring students. The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic community at SoMAS and will have the opportunity to contribute to Stony Brook University's strategic priority of addressing climate solutions. SoMAS is a multi-disciplinary environment providing access to state-of-the-art research facilities and with opportunities for collaboration on interdisciplinary teams to address complex coastal and climate change issues within the School. There is excellent potential for collaboration across departments, like the Coastal and Hydraulic Engineering Research Laboratory in Civil Engineering and with other resources such Brookhaven National Laboratory , and the NY Climate Exchange. The successful candidate will commit to departmental and university service.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D.(or foreign equivalent) in Coastal Geology, Oceanography, or a closely related field in hand no later than August 2025. Demonstrated expertise in coastal processes with a strong research background in one or more of the following areas: Shoreline evolution, beach dynamics, barrier island systems, estuarine processes, or shelf sediment dynamics. Proficiency in observational methods and models, as applied to coastal systems. Track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant fields. Commitment to secure external research funding. Strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in coastal geology, marine coastal processes, and coastal research. Strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise in developing and applying coastal resiliency strategies. Familiarity with policy aspects of coastal management and climate change adaptation. Interdisciplinary research experience linking coastal geology with other marine or atmospheric sciences. Research experience in marine coastal and/or shelf sediment dynamics. Experience in course and curriculum development. Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students. Experience obtaining and managing external research funding.
