What you'll do

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Staff Systems Engineer who will be a key technical leader among the Software and Platform team, helping enhance the architecture of our mobile satellite connectivity platform. The work you perform will be central to Viasat's key mobility products, that deliver world class Internet service to commercial and private aircraft, maritime vessels and other mobile venues throughout the world. This role is pivotal in defining the technical blueprint for our platform, ensuring it aligns with business objectives, and helping drive innovation and implementation.


The day-to-day

  • Technical Leadership: You provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, providing guidance leading to solutions that adhere to architectural principles.
  • Technology Evaluation: You stay aware of emerging technologies and industry trends to find opportunities for platform enhancement.
  • Requirements Decomposition: You work with business partners and contractual documentation to identify and document customer requirements, and analyze those requirements against existing product implementation to maximize reuse.
  • Performance Optimization: You will collaborate with engineering teams to optimize platform performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Problem Solving: You explore complex technical issues and develop innovative solutions.
  • Platform Architecture: You are a key member of the team who architects the overall connectivity platform, encompassing hardware, software, and network components.
  • Documentation: You author and maintain comprehensive architectural documentation, including diagrams, specifications, and standards. Author externally facing Interface Control Documents.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with product management, development, and operations teams to ensure alignment and successful project/product delivery.

What you'll need

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, with a strong focus on platform architecture.
  • Proven track record designing and implementing complex systems, preferably with a focus on satellite Internet connectivity to mobile platforms.
  • Detailed knowledge of networking, storage, and virtualization technologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical team members.
  • Strong and proven leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Travel up to 10%.

What will help you on the job

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with mobile satellite communication platforms.

Salary range

$140,800.00 - $207,500.00 / annually.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $174,900.00- $244,900.00/ annually
