New York - Learning & Development Manager

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Professional Development, the Learning & Development Manager will primarily be responsible for formal and informal training for attorneys and staff in all firm departments and offices, including creating and implementing comprehensive legal and professional skills curricula, aligned with the Winston Development Frameworks and the unique needs of each practice and team. The Learning & Development Manager will work extensively and proactively with the Litigation Department Co-Chairs, the Transactions Department Co-Chairs, the Directors of Practice Operations, administrative chiefs and department heads to identify and anticipate training needs and design in-house programs for associates, partners and staff. The Learning & Development Manager will also work closely with the Director of Professional Development to integrate and align legal and professional skills training, leadership development initiatives, and learning goals for attorneys and staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with Director of Professional Development and talent team to design and implement a cohesive and innovative attorney learning curriculum that integrates practice group learning curricula, professional skills training, and specialty programming.
  • Manage all existing training curricula, including Winston University Programs, new associate orientation, newly elevated partner orientation, and summer associate training. Plan and project needs for upcoming trainings and collaborate with practice group leaders, training advisors, and subject matter experts to update and improve existing training programs to reflect updates in the law, legal market trends and business needs, changes in training format or approach, and feedback from program evaluations.
  • Partner with internal subject matter experts and external consultants to assist with creating new training programs, including drafting and preparing materials, case studies and case files; work with presenters to customize training content and ensure that it is part of a cohesive learning strategy.
  • Work with Director of Professional Development to design and develop staff training programs and work collaboratively with colleagues in the HR team to identify training needs and opportunities; schedule and implement new programs and curricula and track learning initiatives to ensure that Winston University programs for professional staff are aligned with the Winston development framework and the unique needs of each professional staff department.
  • Work with Talent team to ensure the effective onboarding of lateral associates including designing and executing lateral associate orientation programs.
  • Track learning and development progress by practice group and department
  • Manage the delivery of all programs through online resources, live programs, and videoconferencing.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Coaching and Well-Being and Career Development Advisors to create training programs that are responsive to trends and employee needs and promote holistic professional growth.
  • Work closely with Attorney Recruiting & Development and Business Development to ensure that attorney and client training align with the firm's strategic goals.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with and regularly update all relevant parties at the firm, e.g., Department Chairs, group heads, administrative chiefs, department heads, etc., regarding Learning & Development activities, soliciting both input and feedback
  • Actively research and incorporate professional development trends as they pertain to the legal industry
  • Work closely with the Pro Bono department to identify experiential training opportunities though pro bono work
  • Identify and coordinate knowledge management systems, processes and tools

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • J.D. required
  • 3 + years of experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm or government agency required
  • Must live within a commutable distance to the local office required
  • Professional Development experience in a law firm preferred

  • Ability to establish credibility and build strong relationships at all levels of the firm across practices and geographies, particularly with department chairs, directors of practice operations, training advisors, administrative chiefs, department heads, and talent team
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and innovative problem-solving capabilities
  • Outstanding writing and verbal communication and excellent presentation skills. Ability to effectively tailor communications for different stakeholders
  • Extremely detail-oriented, strong organizational, analytical, and excellent project management skills

SALARY

New York based applicants only: The target annual salary range for this role is currently $165,000- $192,000 based on a regular, full-time schedule. The amount of compensation offered will be determined by several factors, including but not limited to experience, qualifications, market data, and internal equity. Total compensation includes a comprehensive healthcare benefits package, yearly retirement contribution, and may include an annual discretionary merit bonus.
