Position Summary
The Substance Use Research and Education (SURE) Center at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy (Albuquerque, NM) is seeking a qualified candidate to join a dynamic and highly productive multi-disciplinary research team. The SURE Center conducts multiple clinical, translational, and community-based research studies focusing on the impact of substance use disorders on vulnerable populations. The SURE Center and partners at the UNM School of Medicine and at the Mind Research Network were awarded a large NIH grant to participate in the Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) study - a national longitudinal study focusing on early childhood development in vulnerable and general populations. The HBCD Study with the SURE center is one of a twenty-five centers across the U.S. working to enroll and follow participating families from pregnancy through early childhood. The long-term goal of the HBCD study is to gain better understanding of how child development is affected by exposures to environmental and social experiences and conditions. Under the direct supervision of the SURE Center's Research Scientist 3, the HS/Associate Scientist 1 manages and coordinates the on-site establishment and execution of research and associated administrative protocol within the defined parameters of a NIH-funded research study; participates in the planning, development, and implementation of laboratory, clinical, and/or field research within a dynamic work environment. Contributes as appropriate to the development of summary reports, presentations, schedules, coordinates, and performs study-related procedures, including administration of structured questionnaires and collection of biological specimens; collects and prepares data and conducts a variety of standardized tests and analyses in accordance with detailed protocol and procedural specifications; participates as appropriate in the interpretation of field research data and in the publication and/or presentation of results. He/she/they will work closely with the study consultants, co-investigators, and laboratory personnel.
This position requires the ability to work flexible hours, as required by studies. Flexible hours include either early morning and/or late evening hours. Rotated weekend coverage of research activities is also required within a 40-hour work week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, selects and applies standard scientific techniques, procedures, and maintains high efficiency and data quality standards for a variety of research assignments.
  • Leads and provides guidance and instruction to staff and students to support research activities and measures.
  • Coordinates administrative and fiscal support for the SURE Center operations, including research-related purchasing, documentation, reconciliation, and reporting activities.
  • Oversees the institutional and protocol-specific trainings and research certifications are up-to-date and upheld and ensures specific data entry and verification processes through multiple research study platforms and applications.
  • Serves as a lead coordinator for recruitment and retention of research participants; coordinates oversight for main and pilot studies to include carrying out standard operating procedures on specific study participant objectives.
  • Develop and/or contribute to the publication and/or presentation of results, and the development of grant proposals.
  • Develop and maintain manual and electronic files and databases related to project activities and contribute to progress reports as appropriate.
  • Maintain a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art research techniques.
  • Assists the research team with study activities such as neurodevelopmental assessments, MRI scans of participants, biosensor management and tracking, sample acquisition, processing, and storage.
  • Routinely covers after hours and on-call evenings and weekends to ensure sample acquisition and processing within 3-hour study protocol window.

  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Prior research experience with multi-faceted clinical studies.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and deadline-oriented environment.
  • Prior experience in screening, recruiting and interviewing patients for a research study.
  • Training and prior experience in collecting and processing biological samples.
  • Coordinating study visits in clinical studies.
  • Experience with IRB/compliance and/or recordkeeping for quality assurance and quality control.
