Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented individual to fill the role of Department Human Resources Representative. This pivotal position oversees human resources activities within a large academic medical department, managing transactions for both staff and students across various locations and divisions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational abilities, thrive in an independent work environment, and foster a positive, adaptable team dynamic. Pediatrics is a large department with over 500 faculty/staff/students in multiple locations and 18 centers/divisions.

In this role, strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and fostering a positive, adaptable team environment are essential. As a centralized and critical part of the departmental administrative and executive team, this position ensures effective prioritization, delegation, communication, and coordination of needs across divisions. You will provide excellent customer service and support to faculty, staff, and students, collaborating closely with department leadership to address HR-related needs. A hands-on approach to hiring, onboarding, and employment processes is required, along with efficiently managing data entry, documentation, and participating in staff HR functions. Success in this role requires being accessible to department staff and leaders, serving as a proactive change agent driving continuous improvement, and demonstrating strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Manage and administer the scope of HR services, to include day-to-day employment transactions, hiring, compensation and performance management
  • Collaborate with hiring managers and department leaders to resolve recruitment and hiring issues
  • Utilize the UNM HR Salary Equity and Placement Tool (SPET) and serve as a liaison between the School of Medicine and hiring managers to ensure that salary offers align with industry standards, internal equity considerations, and the specific qualifications and experience of candidates


  • Provide consultation, HR guidance and training to Division Chiefs, managers, individuals or department leadership on UNM HR policy and practices regarding current hiring practices
  • Participates in the development and implementation of process improvement changes within the Department of Pediatrics to provide efficiency, transparency, or training on staff hiring
  • Act as a liaison between faculty, staff, and University HR on topics such as benefits and retirement plans, while maintaining clear communication and alignment with SOM HR and UNM HR consultants.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and updating of department recruitment procedures, utilizing HR systems such as UNM JOBS, SmartSheet, Excel, Adobe, and Outlook to manage data entry, track progress, and streamline recruitment activities.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration
  • Experience with Human Resource functions; recruitment and hiring processes for staff
  • Experience with process improvements
  • Experience in interpreting policy and managing processes to execute HR strategies
  • Experience hiring staff and students using UNM JOBS
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, communicate effectively as a consultant on policy, and successfully work in a team environment
