Job Summary

The scientist will work on two NIH-funded R01 grants, Project Migrante and CRISOL Mente. One of them is Project Migrante, an observatory of health and access to services among migrants traveling through the Mexico - U.S. border region, is led by Dr. Ana Martinez-Donate, Professor of Community Health and Prevention (www.martinez-donate.weebly.com). This project consists of a series of surveys dating back to 2009 that have gathered data on the health status, health behaviors, and contextual determinants of health among Mexican and other Latin American migrant flows converging on the Norther Mexican border region. Different surveys have emphasized HIV risk, chronic disease, mental health, and substance use.

CRISOL Mente, co-led by Dr. Ana Martinez-Donate and Dr. Mariana Lazo, Associate Research Professor at the Dornsife School of Public Health, is a community-engaged, multi-level intervention to reduce mental health disparities among Latino communities in Philadelphia. The intervention includes a lay health worker (LHW)-based component to connect community members to free, culturally tailored mental health services at two community clinics; an LHW-driven social marketing campaign to increase awareness and reduce stigma related to mental health; and coalition building activities to strengthen the capacity of Latino-serving organizations providing mental health services to Latino communities in the area.

Under the mentorship from Drs. Martinez-Donate and Lazo, the scientist will focus on analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from these projects and previous studies that informed them. They will have the opportunity to lead publications and develop their own research ideas, as well as contribute as a co-author to publications led by other researchers. Financial support may be available for travel to present results at scientific meetings.

This position is and is a full-time position for one year, and renewable for a second year. The Scientist will work at the Department of Community Health & Prevention within the Dornsife School of Public Health, which offers unique mentoring and community-engagement opportunities.

Essential Functions



  • Conducting mostly quantitative data analyses.
  • Contribute to writing research papers and publications as lead or co-author.
  • Presenting results at scientific meetings.
  • Focus heavily on manuscript writing and other dissemination activities
  • Developing new research ideas linked to the general project themes.
  • Contributing to grant writing, and actively participating in collaborative research meetings.
  • Attend weekly and/or biweekly meetings with mentors and members of the research teams.
  • Network and collaborate with other investigators in both the U.S. and Mexico.
  • Engage with the Urban Health Collaborative as needed.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a PhD or Doctoral degree in epidemiology, demography, sociology, or related fields is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience is required.
  • Strong quantitative skills are required.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Qualitative skills are preferred.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Training and research experience with analysis of data from large cross-sectional surveys, panel studies, and experimental and quasi-experimental intervention designs focused on Latino and/or immigrant health.
  • Strong interest in furthering their expertise and publications in the area of Latino and immigrant health.

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from a minimum of $47,490.00 to a maximum of $71,230.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
