Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Natural Sciences, through innovative, hands-on and technology-rich learning experiences, prepares students for competitive STEM career opportunities as well as graduate and professional programs. The department fosters a transformative learning experience by promoting active learning, scientific reasoning and critical thinking while maintaining a rigorous academic environment that meets the students where they are, while helping them reach their full potential. Through undergraduate research, traditional graduate and an Accelerated BS-MS programmatic linkage, the department prepares students for and expands access to graduate level education.
Description of Work
The Endowed Chair is expected to be a distinguished scholar and teacher in a progressive area of biology, such as molecular biosciences, biotechnology, biomedical, organismal, or environmental research. The presence of the position on the faculty will provide increased intellectual depth and further enhance the quality of teaching and research already underway at ECSU by enhancing active and experiential learning.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and mentoring of a diverse student population; expertise in active and experiential learning, integrating research into the classroom; expertise in establishing partnerships with the scientific and education community; knowledge of and experience in developing bridge programs to graduate education and graduate fellowship opportunities for students; research or publications in scholarly teaching.

Have a distinguished scholarly research portfolio with a proven record of securing funds from agencies, foundations etc., to increase, train and retain the number of intellectually talented biology majors.

Experience developing and enhancing scientific curriculum and a track record of publishing scholarly articles that include undergraduate and graduate students.

Demonstrate involvement in programs designed to recruit intellectually talented biology majors. Scholarly publications and presentations demonstrating work involving undergraduate and graduate students are expected.

Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Minimum Training and Experience
A Doctorate degree is required in Biology or related areas. May hire at the lower rank of Distinguished Scholar based on review of credentials. The individual selected for the Distinguished Professorship will be a published scholar in biology. His/her presence on the faculty will provide intellectual depth while further strengthening the quality of teaching in the fulfillment of the university's mission of excellence in research and scholarly activities.
