Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Biostatistics (BIOS) is internationally recognized as a leader in Biostatistics research and training. It is one of eight departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health whose mission is to improve public health, promote individual well-being and eliminate health inequities across North Carolina and around the world. This mission is accomplished through an outstanding program of collaborative teaching, research and service. The Department of Biostatistics is one of the largest, most complex departments at UNC, receiving over $35 million in research funding in 2022. Currently BIOS includes approximately 290 students (90 undergraduate, 200 graduate), 100 permanent staff members, and 40 faculty members (30 with primary appointments in BIOS), as well as an additional 20 adjunct faculty members. The Department of Biostatistics is housed in two different locations: administrative and faculty offices, including a suite of offices for graduate students, in McGavran-Greenberg Hall and the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center at Carolina Square.

Position Summary

Duties this position will perform are (but not limited to):Conducting technical accounting tasks, including maintaining accounting records in collaboration with the Grants Manager and Accountant I. This role involves a comprehensive review of charges to ensure accuracy, reconciling transactions with supporting documentation, and identifying and correcting discrepancies. You will be held accountable for the precision of entries and the reconciliation of data and information.Managing and reconciling Concur and Web Travel requests and reports submitted by faculty, staff, and students.Handling various general financial activities, such as processing vendor and independent contractor requests, check requests, and purchase requisitions.Reconciling F&A and trust funds for non-personnel charges. This includes thoroughly reviewing all non-personnel charges within these accounts for accuracy and maintaining detailed backup documentation for all charges.*Overseeing the maintenance of pay plan records within the internal database, ensuring data accuracy and timely updates.This role requires a thorough evaluation of financial activities in conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration, Grants Manager, and Accountant I. This position will responsible for identifying issues related to spending, expense accounting, and the fiscal performance of various account. Responsibilities also include serving as the primary contact for inquiries and issues from management and faculty. Additionally, this position will reconcile monthly statements from accounting records, generate reports for monthly meetings and ad hoc requests, and process or approve transactions such as vendor requests, independent contractor requests, check requests, purchase requisitions, travel expenses, and journal entries for grant, trust, and state accounts for Biostatistics staff and faculty.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

-Excellent interpersonal communication skills. -Demonstrated ability to write precisely and clearly. -Proven analytical and reasoning abilities, knowledge of evaluating financial records and bookkeeping. -Thorough knowledge of and skill in applying generally accepted accounting principles. -Directly related experience with computerized financial reporting and analysis systems.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

- PeopleSoft Experience is preferred, or experience with a similar financial system.- Experience with UNC research administration systems and processes (e.g., RAMSeS Financial Guarantees, Sub agreement Pre-Drafting Action & Response Certification (SPARC), F&A Sharing) is a plus.- Knowledge of UNC procurement systems such as Connect Carolina, Buy Carolina, Concur Travel, and Web Travel is a plus.- Ability to use database, web authoring and/or presentation software is a plus.- Ability to research, identify, and implement software applications to increase productivity (such as Auto Hotkey).- Bachelor's degree in business administration or accounting; or Associate's degree in business administration or accounting and two years of experience; or graduation from high school and four years of experience as an accounting technician.
