Job Description
Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography, and Administration of Justice.

Reporting to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services, the Institutional Research Officer will facilitate institutional research and assessment activities to support the College's processes for institutional effectiveness, reporting requirements, and accreditation standards. This position will also fill the roles of Affirmative Action Officer and SACCOC Liaison for Southwest.

Job duties will include:

  • Institutional Planning: Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive institutional research strategies to enhance data-driven decision-making processes across all aspects of the community college with an emphasis on predictive analytics.

  • Data and Information Leadership: Oversee the collection, analysis, and interpretation of institutional data, providing accurate and timely reports to support institutional effectiveness, accreditation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Program Assessment: Collaborate with various stakeholders to identify key performance indicators, assess institutional goals, and establish benchmarks for measuring and improving student success, retention, and completion rates at both the institutional and college level.

  • Strategic Enrollment Management: Design and conduct research projects and analytical studies that contribute to the college's understanding of student demographics, learning outcomes, student success, and other factors influencing enrollment, academic achievement, and institutional effectiveness.

  • Data Security Manager: Manage and maintain the college's data infrastructure, ensuring the integrity, security, and accessibility of institutional data, both internally and externally, while staying abreast of emerging trends and best practices in data management and research methodologies.

  • Accreditation Leadership and Management: Serve as a liaison between the college and external agencies, participating in state and national reporting efforts, and ensuring compliance with all relevant data reporting requirements, including serving as the College's Reports Coordinator for SCHEV, its IPEDS Keyholder, and its SACSCOC liaison among others.

  • Employee Development: Coordinate training in data collection and usage across campus, providing guidance, professional development opportunities, and fostering a collaborative and results-driven work environment within the institutional research department.

  • General College Operations: Participates in the College's calendar creation process and oversees the collection and evaluation of unit assessments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree in a relevant field


  • Experience, education, or training in coordinating institutional research operations, working with enterprise-scale data systems, and maintaining compliance with regional or national accrediting agencies.
  • Experience with data modeling
  • Progressive experience working in a higher education setting
  • Strong background in data analysis, programming, and database management
  • Proficiency with survey methodology, including instrument design and effective administration techniques; and proven ability in statistical and qualitative analysis in a higher education setting
  • Willingness to implement current industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in institutional research and higher education
  • Oral and written communication, especially the creation of long reports and presenting complex ideas and analytic findings clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with how community colleges provide access, respond to community needs, and provide equity is desirable.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural inclusivity in the workplace and research activities;
