Albany Medical College invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Neuroscience & Experimental Therapeutics (https://www.amc.edu/education/basic-science-ms-phd/neuroscience-experimental-therapeutics/). The successful candidate will qualify for appointment as an associate professor or full professor with a PhD and/or MD degree. She/he will have outstanding research credentials, including an extramurally funded research program and track record of research productivity, a history of administrative leadership and/or significant evidence of potential for such leadership. Applicants that utilize integrated approaches involving translational models that address problems related to the pathophysiology of human disease are particularly encouraged to apply. The new Chair is expected to provide research leadership and to promote career development for 17 existing faculty members with research interests such as roles of glial cells in normal brain functioning and in neurological disorders, mechanisms and pharmacological approaches of human inherited demyelinating neuropathies, determining novel targets for vascular contributions to dementia, molecular mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis, sleep & respiratory neurobiology and the neuroscience of reproductive regulation. The new Chair also has responsibility for ensuring excellence of the Department of Neuroscience & Experimental Therapeutics' graduate, post-graduate, and medical school's academic and educational missions. Newly recruited faculty, including the Director, will be able to receive joint appointments in an appropriate clinical department to encourage the development of physician-scientist collaborations. The New York Capital Region provides a rich academic environment, research resources and extensive opportunities for collaborations with surrounding universities and centers such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the State University of New York at Albany (UAlbany). Other significant research partners include the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Center for Research, the Neural Stem Cell Institute, and GE Medical Systems Information Technologies, Inc. The Albany area offers diverse cultural and recreational attractions with easy access to Boston, New York City, and the Adirondack, Catskill and Berkshire Mountains. A curriculum vitae, a description of research interests, a vision statement for building/maintaining a basic neuroscience center, and at least four letters of recommendation are required.
