The Systems Engineer role performs system management and administrative activities that are complex in nature. The position ensures the stability, integrity and efficient operation of server systems that supports research, instruction and administration within the College.
The position supports a multi-node virtual environment (Proxmox) as well as physical servers providing network services - file servers, email, DNS, DHCP, software licenses, SFTP, Git repositories. The position manages the infrastructure and works with the College of Engineering Network Services department to implement all services.

Essential Functions

  • Installing, updating, and remediating multiuser enterprise server Linux operating systems including Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise.
  • Maintaining storage server systems and technologies including NFS, SMB, ZFS, NIS and OpenLDAP.
  • Network design and management including private storage and research networks.
  • Installing physical server, switch, and communications cabling systems into datacenter and research laboratory environments.
  • Design, implement and maintain virtual infrastructure such as Proxmox and containerized technologies such as Docker.
  • Support of networking services - DHCP, DNS, LDAP, SSH and PostFix
  • Installing and updating commercial and open source Linux applications both manually and through the use of automation tools such as Ansible.
  • Support of Linux development environments including GitLab servers and advanced Python configurations.
  • Orchestrating server system monitoring, penetration testing and vulnerability remediation tasks.
  • Web server support for Apache, PHP, MySQL and NGINX.
  • Developing and deploying generalized OS layouts for servers and research systems using unattended deployment methods such as Kickstart.
  • Maintaining backup infrastructure for server, research instrument control systems, and Linux workstations.
  • Work with researchers and IT staff to develop innovative solutions for high performance and high capacity research projects.


Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

Systems Engineer:
High school diploma and 11 years of experience OR
Associate's degree and 7 years of experience OR
Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience.
Typical salaries are between $68,200 - $81,100

Sr. Systems Engineer:
Bachelor's degree and 6 years of experience
Typical salaries are between $75,867 - $91,833.00

Scope of Experience:
Relevant IT experience in the administration of distributed computer systems, preferably in a university setting.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
