The Desktop Design & Support Engineer, a member of the Desktop Engineering Team, supports enterprise class, mission-critical systems and platforms, servicing The University of Vermont Health Network. The Desktop Design & Support Engineer is responsible for understanding business and technical requirements to develop design specifications using our virtual and full client desktop suite of tools, cloud integration, Windows Servers, Active Directory/Group Policy, and other operating, network, and infrastructure systems. The primary focus is on client computing infrastructure services; endpoint design and engineering of virtual / physical infrastructure and application services. Provides technical support to IT application teams with the ability to assimilate cross-discipline, cross-technology concepts and processes. Staff must provide support coverage 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Shift coverage and on-call coverage may be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, upgrade, monitoring, tuning, scripting, maintenance of production virtual and full client endpoint systems, ensuring compliance with standards and security protocols.
  • Troubleshoot applications within the end user compute environment, identifying and resolving issues to maintain high performance and optimal user experience.
  • Documentation to sustain builds and operational support/maintenance processes.
  • Stay informed of related technology, recommending future system enhancements to improve supportability and reliability.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, business, or other related field; formal technical training or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • 5-7 years of in-depth knowledge and proficient hands-on experience, configuring, managing and supporting Microsoft technologies within a large-scale virtual and physical end user compute environment. Capability to identify and resolve issues promptly, maintaining high performance and end user experience.
  • Microsoft Windows Desktop (2010/2011), Server Operating Systems (2016/2019/2022), MSOffice 365 products, Active Directory, Group Policy, MCM/Intune/Autopilot, Certificates (PKI), AzureAD/Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Citrix Virtualization Portfolio; XenApp/XenDesktop, PVS/MCS deployments, NetScaler/ADC, User Profile Management (Citrix UPM/Microsoft FSLogix).
  • Virtualization Hypervisors; VMware ESXi, Nutanix AHV.
  • IGEL OS, Universal Management Suite (UMS), Cloud Gateway (ICG) and related technologies.
  • Imprivata OneSign and Confirm ID product support, understanding of identity and access management, authentication workflows.
  • Experience with scripting, PowerShell, and automation tools to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including DNS, TCP/IP, VLANs.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and knowledge of the SAFe / Agile framework.
  • Desirable:Technical IT certifications or experience with related technologies, such as Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Admin, Citrix (CCA-V, CCP-V), VMware (VCTA, VCP), Nutanix (NCA, NCP).

The role of Desktop Design & Support Engineer includes multiple levels. The hiring team reserves the right to determine appropriate level placement of our final candidate. Level and salary upon hiring are commensurate with years of relevant experience and previously obtained IT certification(s).
