Department: WCAS Spanish & Portuguese

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, with a preferred start date of September 1, 2025. We seek scholars working on questions of race in Hispanic and/or Lusophone literary and cultural studies. We especially welcome applications from scholars whose research displays comparative geopolitical approaches; transatlantic, transpacific, and global Hispano/Lusophone frameworks are all welcome. Similarly, we encourage applications from scholars whose work transits between disciplines and connects in novel ways with fields such as the environmental humanities, critical race theory, and social justice. We encourage applications from scholars dwelling on different historical periods as well as long duree processes. Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly achievement and promise, a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching in Spanish or Portuguese and English, and a willingness to participate fully in a vibrant program with strong ties to neighboring disciplines in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Applicants must have Ph.D. in hand by time of appointment.

Applicants should submit (1) a letter of application, (2) a full curriculum vitae, (3) a writing sample, (4) a statement of teaching philosophy, and (5) three contacts for letters of recommendation. Questions should be directed to Emily Maguire at spanish-and-portuguese-chair@northwestern.edu

Submit your application here https://spanish-portuguese.northwestern.edu/about/open-positions/index.html

Review of applications will start on November 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled.
