Description

Schedule: 40 hours, day shift

Under the general direction of the Director (& Asst Director) of Facilities; responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and testing piping systems for water, gas vacuum, oxygen, sanitary systems, medical air, sewerage, pumps, and all related plumbing devices throughout the hospital. Typically works on more complex problems and systems.



  • Installs, maintains, repairs, inspects, and tests piping systems for water, gas vacuum, oxygen, sanitary systems, medical sewerage, pumps, drains, and all related devices throughout the hospital.
  • Responds to all emergency plumbing situations when and where appropriate.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints (piping drawings) for various information such as piping size and locations. Conducts surveys of various systems.
  • Prepares material listing as required for work order requests and other routinely assigned tasks.
  • Responsibilities may involve participating in planning activities at the departmental level or assisting in the development of solutions to specific problems.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment in the area (s) of Facilities Department responsibility (areas as assigned).
  • Responds to phone calls, pages, and work orders from all areas of the hospital as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Communicate with other employees and management on necessary information regarding piping systems.
  • Maintains appropriate records of testing, shutdowns, and/or assigned duties.
  • Ensures compliance with appropriate plumbing codes and/or NFPA99 Standards.
  • May be required to carry the on-call pager.
  • May be required to work weekends or rotating shifts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required. Formal technical plumbing training generally beyond high school is required.
  • Must be able to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations at a level generally acquired through a high school education is preferred.
  • Requires successful completion of an apprentice program usually lasting four years.
  • Licensure (Journeyman) as a plumber in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is required.
  • Requires interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively and to cooperate with staff throughout the hospital. Must be able to clearly explain plumbing issues to other personnel.
  • Requires analytical skills to evaluate systems and to develop appropriate solutions to plumbing problems.
  • Requires physical ability to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Requires knowledge of plumbing supplies and equipment and the ability to read blueprints and piping diagrams.
  • Requires the ability to work independently. Refers to supervisory staff for clarification or exception to established policies and procedures.
  • Staff adheres to all I C.A.R.E. Standards
