Job Summary

UTSW Is seeking an Accountant III to join the Sponsored Programs (SPA) Award Setup team. The important function of this team is to interpret contracts and grants to facilitate setting up awards which originating in eGrants or eAgreements and then pushed through PeopleSoft. Tasks of this role include understanding the contract, budget (IDC, MTDC, etc), type of award funding, type of billing function as all of these will ensure the award is setup correctly for other teams and departments to accurately spend and track expenditures in our financial system of record. The setup team ensures many of the financial attributes are coded correctly to further reduce maintenance issues of the award sourcing. This team reviews compliance information (IRB and IACUC approvals) in accordance with Uniform Guidance and the Institution. This team works closely with members of the Pre-Award teams, other SPA finance teams as well as Contracts Management and Research and Academic Systems team members. This position is deadline driven and time sensitive for the success of the Researchers beginning their science and Sponsored Program teams.


Experience and Education

Minimum Requirements



  • Master's degree with three (3) years professional experience in governmental and/or commercial accounting or auditing. OR
  • Bachelor's degree with five (5) years professional experience in governmental and/or commercial accounting or auditing. OR
  • Associate's degree with seven (7) years professional experience in governmental and/or commercial accounting or auditing.


Job Duties

  • Maintains internal accounting procedures, clerical operations, and workflow to maximize efficiency.
  • Advises management personnel relative to planning and revising budgets to ensure monies are expended correctly and no financial difficulties occur as result of inadequate planning or underestimates of projected expenses.
  • Prepares or coordinates preparation of monthly, quarterly, and/or annual financial reports, schedules for such financial reports and other special reports as required.
  • Approves expense vouchers.
  • Verifies ledgers for correctness and maintenance of adequate balances and reconciles monthly and annual reports.
  • May supervise posting of entries to such ledgers as general, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Examines postings in ledgers and journals for accuracy and compliance with prescribed accounting procedures.
  • May determine work priorities for staff of lower level Accountants and/or Accounting Clerks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Work requires ability to exercise considerable judgment in interpretation of policy and application of accounting procedures and practices to work problems. Work requires advanced knowledge of spreadsheets and word-processing software. Work requires ability to apply mathematical reasoning to analyze data and identify discrepancies in financial accounts. Work requires skill in using ten key by touch.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in general office area.
