The Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies (
DARS) prepares professionals to help guide others through challenges in life-emotional or mental health concerns, substance use issues, physical illness or disability, relationship issues, life transitions, or career decisions. The department's programs have strong administrative support, excellent teaching and counseling facilities, and attract quality students interested in serving. Our mission is to support the health and well-being of individuals and communities through innovative and socially just research, training in an accessible environment, providing culturally affirming and person-centered services, and advocating for an equitable and inclusive society. East Carolina University is in Greenville, North Carolina. Greenville is the cultural, educational, medical, and economic center of Eastern North Carolina. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000 and is one hour from the Research Triangle to the west and the Crystal Coast to the east. East Carolina University (28,000 students) is part of a vibrant health care community including
ECU Health, a level 1 trauma center and 1400+ bed health system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties. The
ECU College of Allied Health Sciences has strong working relationships with the
ECU College of Health and Human Performance, College of Engineering and Technology, Brody School of Medicine, and School of Dental Medicine.
ECU is home to both Army and Air Force
ROTC programs and is in proximity to Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine, and Navy bases. The Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies is near the College of Nursing, Laupus Health Sciences Library, Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and

Job Duties |
The College of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Addiction and Rehabilitation Studies (full-time, 12-month appointment). The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at a tenured position at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level.
The successful candidate will:
* provide shared governance, along with departmental faculty, and coordination of the DARS' undergraduate program,
CACREP accredited graduate programs, and graduate certificate programs, responding to inquiries regarding the overall academic unit;
* represent the department to the College of Allied Health Sciences and other schools and colleges within the university to build collaborative education and research efforts;
* engage in professional development activities for administrators;
* develop budget requests in consultation with the Dean, and is responsible for managing the departmental budget;
* maximize the effective use of all resources for serving students, supporting faculty, and enhancing programs;
* provide mentorship/support for department-sponsored operations;
* supervise the work of the faculty, conduct productivity reviews, and make recommendations for promotion and tenure, and advancement in rank;
* provide classroom instruction in
DARS programs;
* provide or delegate year-round leadership to the operation of the program(s); and
* receive appropriate release time from faculty member responsibilities to administer the academic unit.

Minimum Education/Experience |
The successful candidate will have a strong record of teaching, research, service, and leadership and be appointed in a tenured position at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level.
* PhD in Counseling from a
CACREP accredited program, or doctoral degree in a closely related field and one-year full-time experience as a faculty in a counselor education program.
* All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
* Possession of, or eligibility through reciprocity, NC licensure as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor.
* Experience in securing external grant funding. |

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education |
- Ability to promote a collegial department environment to support and encourage tenure track, tenured, and fixed-term faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service.
- Effectively manage the department, respectful of academic freedom and autonomy
- Effectively collaborate and encourage interfacing of academic programs within the unit, college, and university.
- Provide academic and administrative leadership to help actualize the vision of a multidisciplinary faculty and programs.
- Possess knowledge of general academic policies and curriculum issues at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Have experience supporting faculty to secure external grant funding,
- Have experience providing oversight and support for student recruitment, retention, and program development.
- Have experience with interprofessional collaboration.
- Be able to coordinate curriculum development and ensure consistency with university procedures and policies.
- Be able to implement a departmental vision, in collaboration with faculty, that reflects the teaching, research, and service values of the department in the context of the College's and University's academic visions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated academic, research, or practice-related administrative and leadership. experience (e.g., program coordinator, director, department chair, professional association board or committee leader, or related experience).
- Record of clinical, educational, and/or community experience in human services, counseling, or a related field.
- Leadership experience in state or national professional organizations.
- Demonstrated success with conflict resolution.
- Proven ability to manage budgets and personnel.
- Experience in articulating unit needs and goals and securing support and resources for success.
- Experience in curriculum and academic program development, assessment, and accreditation.
