Description

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Washington College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of French (open specialization) to begin on January 14, 2025. This position is for the Spring semester 2025; however, pending enrollment, the position may lead to a renewable contract, particularly if the candidate is also able to teach German language courses.

The ideal candidate will have a record of effectiveness in and commitment to undergraduate teaching and possess native or near-native proficiency in French. Preference will be given to candidates with the ability to teach German language courses in the future as well. Teaching responsibilities in the spring semester will consist of a course each at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced language levels in French. In addition, the faculty member is expected to support program-related co-curricular activities.

The World Languages and Literatures Department is a vibrant program with six faculty members and numerous curricular and co-curricular experiential learning opportunities for students. A typical course load consists of three classes each semester during the academic year.


Qualifications

  • Successful candidates must possess a Ph.D. in French at the time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates who also have graduate work or professional experience in German. ABDs and MAs will be considered.


  • Applicants should have experience teaching French at the college level and the demonstrated ability for engaged and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level, employing pedagogies that seek to develop communicative and intercultural competence.


  • Candidates should be able to articulate a clear understanding of Washington College's liberal arts mission and have experience and/or express specific interest in the mentoring of college student.
