About the Department
The Marketing and Communications team across the Departments of Computer Science ( CSC) and of Electrical and Computer Engineering ( ECE) is responsible for all internal and external communication with relevant stakeholders, including students (5K), prospective students, alumni (28K), and campus community. This includes every facet of communications, from print publication to photography, and from live video to social media
Essential Job Duties
This position seeks a candidate with strong written communication skills and social media expertise. A strong candidate would benefit from having a wide range of communication skills and experience and be able to seamlessly pivot in mediums as the role requires. Major experience required for this position includes the ability to research and identify compelling stories that align with the departments' priorities, conduct the necessary research and interviews to develop the content, write interesting and engaging articles and other audience-focused deliverables, leverage content for a social media strategy, and assist in tracking the performance of written content for online and offline channels.
The ideal candidate would be responsible for prose related to technical material as well as lay-person experience storytelling spanning research work and outcomes, faculty and student profiles and activities, and alumni and donor profiles and events. Content is aimed at both internal and external target audiences.
The position would provide support with writing for the alumni magazine, department newsletters to internal and external audiences, event and activity promotion, alumni and donor communications around giving and events, and social media for multiple stakeholders. Finally, the position would also support broader departmental and campus initiatives, student success initiatives, and help to build ECE and CSC communities to foster student success
Other Responsibilities
Internal communications; limited communication support for research labs and centers; and supervision of student writing interns.
Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to manage the Computer Science department's social media strategy and execution, from planning content editorial, to posting and troubleshooting issues, and utilizing analytical tools to measure performance
  • Understanding of the college's and departments' strategic priorities and ability to research and identify stories that align to those priorities and communicate the desired information and messages in a compelling way.
  • Understanding of academic departmental structures, National Science Foundation efforts, and grant-based communication and develop communications with those constraints in mind.
  • Ability to form strong relationships with key content partners
  • Ability to problem-solve on a fluid level, adapting solutions to current or future problems before stakeholders are affected.
  • Basic technical ability to develop communications that is adapted to the intended platform or format
  • Strategic communications planning experience; expert writing capabilities that follow AP and department brand style; editing and proofing expertise.
  • Detailed knowledge of all major social media platforms; current social marketing trends; analytical and content management platforms; and lead generation.
  • Relationship-building skills that help open opportunities for story identification and storytelling
  • Familiarity with technical platforms for department communications and ability to format content to those platforms, as well as edit and update content.
  • Knowledge and experience using institutional social media management tools and standards. Experience managing institutional voice and persona on platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram and X
  • Demonstrate the ability to research and understand complex topics- and independently find answers using available resources and experts.
  • Demonstrate the ability to storyboard content ideas and adapt communication voice based on the goals and nature of the written assignment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • APA Journalistic and technical writing proficiency
  • Experience utilizing Social Pilot or equivalent advanced social media marketing platforms; in addition to analytic management with Meta Business Manager, Twitter, and Google Analytics.
  • Experience working within a WordPress environment with custom post types and relationship linking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills which promote collaboration and productivity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills which effectively convey and receive messages in person as well as via phone, email, and social media
  • Must be able to establish and maintain relationships with external and internal audiences
  • Familiarity with APA and NC State brand style; layman grasp of technical material, including ability to story-tell with engineering and science-based topics; reporter-style interview skills; and fact/detail verification and proofing.
