Position Description: |
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa seeks to hire a full-time instructional-track faculty (ITF) member to teach primarily general education (GE) and lower-division courses in SJMC. This is an open-rank, non-tenure-track position. Candidates can be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction, Associate Professor of Instruction, or Professor of Instruction depending on qualifications. The appointment will begin August 20, 2025. The initial appointment is three years (renewable). The candidate's primary responsibility will be teaching undergraduate courses that fulfill general education requirements. Therefore, the faculty member will be expected to teach courses from our existing GE offerings and may be asked to develop new classes to be added to the GE requirement. Existing GE classes include:
- Introduction to Media Effects
- Introduction to Media and Culture
- Introduction to Social Media
- Environmental Communication
- Freedom of Expression
- Community Media
The faculty member will also teach lower-division courses required for the Journalism and Mass Communication major and/or Sport Media and Culture major. The expected course load is 8 courses per year (4 per semester). The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). Education Requirement: |
- PhD in mass communication, journalism, media studies or related disciplinein hand by the start date.

Required Qualifications: |
- Relevant teaching experience at the university level.

Desirable Qualifications: |
- Experience with online teaching
- Experience working with teaching assistants (TAs), in a supervisory capacity or as a peer leader/mentor.
