Since its inception in 1905, the Carnegie Mellon Department of Chemical Engineering has been on the leading edge of research and innovation in chemical engineering. Today, this is truer than ever. With research thrusts across fields such as health and medicine, biofuels, air quality and more, CMU chemical engineering students are paving the way to healthier, cleaner, more efficient future for all.

We are searching for a Research Assistant to work on a project that will develop advanced stochastic mixed-integer programming techniques for the design of multiechelon inventory supply chains arising in the pharmaceutical industry. Aside from developing advanced computational techniques, the project will also address the development of explainability techniques based on symbolic logic and neural networks to provide unique insights on nature of the solutions predicted by the optimization models.

The project requires an individual who has a strong modeling and mathematical background, is familiar with recent advances in the areas of generalized disjunctive programming, mixed-integer programming, stochastic programming, and machine learning, and is highly motivated and independent with strong research skills.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Follows research plans in order to collect, record, and manipulate research data. Maintains accurate and detailed research records and files.
  • Performs library research and field explorations.
  • Performs basic data analysis in order to product reports. Documents results and processes.
  • May test software prototypes. May interact with research subjects in order to perform job functions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience with data collection, analysis, data entry, and record management.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
