Job Summary:

The Academic Advisor position is part of the College of Letters & Science Academic Advising Services team (L&S AAS, https://advising.ls.wisc.edu/), a unit in L&S Student Academic Affairs. L&S AAS strives to advance the L&S commitment to diversity while serving as an entry point for undergraduate students in the College, which has growing academic programs and welcomes several thousand new first-year and transfer students each year. L&S AAS is a generalist advising unit that advises undeclared students across all 65+ majors in the College of Letters & Sciences and collaborates with other academic and student services units.

AAS staff members assist and support undergraduate students in exploring educational goals, learning about academic requirements, navigating the university structure, gaining an understanding and appreciation of the liberal arts, and progressing in a timely fashion toward degree completion. L&S AAS provides holistic, comprehensive, and accurate academic advising that enhances students' Wisconsin Experience. L&S AAS is seeking an academic advisor who values diversity, equity, and inclusion; supports student success; and works collaboratively.

The Advisor will advise at AAS Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR). AAS plays an essential role coordinating the L&S SOAR program in collaboration with advisors from across the College. AAS welcomes more than 2,500 incoming students at SOAR during a large portion of the summer and a three-day period in January prior to the spring term.


Responsibilities:
Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

  • 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 50% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 5% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 5% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 5% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • 15% Engages with committees and project groups focused on operational, functional, or programmatic efforts both within AAS and in collaboration with campus partners

Qualifications:

-At least 1 year of experience in education, advising, or student services; experience working
with college students preferred.
-Experience fostering and promoting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
-Ability to work as part of a team to accomplish organizational goals.
-Demonstrated ability to build rapport with students and knowledge of approaches to student
development.
-An understanding of power, privilege, intersectionality; and a commitment and understanding of work in an educational setting done through these lenses
-Ability to share complex information in a clear and organized manner in both verbal and written
forms to a variety of audiences.
-Demonstrated ability to approach challenges with a positive attitude and solution focused mindset.
-Excellent organizational skills as well as strong attention to accuracy and detail.
-An appreciation for and understanding of the value and benefits of a liberal arts education and an ability to communicate this to students, parents/families, and campus.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $50,000 to $63,697 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $44,543 to $82,851. This position requires that most work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Academic Advisors may be eligible for up to one day a week of remote work at an offsite, non-campus location after onboarding and training are completed.
