Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will focus on original and complex cataloging and metadata projects that enhance the discovery of library and university collections. The position will focus primarily on materials that require original cataloging and the special collections of F.D. Bluford Library.

Primary responsibilities include: Reporting to the Head, Bibliographic, Metadata and Discovery Services the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will work collaboratively to develop, manage, and implement metadata and cataloging projects using standards that optimize discoverability. This position will offer expertise in cataloging standards and best practices for discoverability of materials through new initiatives such as linked data, RDF, BibFrame, and metadata schema such as Dublin Core.

Serve as a liaison to assigned academic department (s). As a liaison, the librarian works collaboratively with library faculty to develop and provide information resources, information literacy instruction, and research expertise to faculty and students.

This is a tenure-track academic appointment carrying faculty status and responsibilities including research, publication and service to meet both the Library's and the University's requirements for tenure and promotion.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of F.D. Bluford Library is to support and advance academic scholarship and research at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University through services, collections, technologies, expertise and spaces. The library is committed to ensuring access to global information resources that inspire exploration, discovery and personal growth.

The library serves over 11,000 students, over 650 faculty, and the residents of the Piedmont Triad region. Open 24-hours a day, library users have access to over a million print and electronic resources, technology-enhanced group study rooms, over 200 computer workstations, wireless access throughout the building, mobile Internet devices, and archives that document the history of the University and the region.
Minimum Requirements
Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited institution program.
  • Experience with cataloging archives and special collections materials.
  • Experience with MARC 21 and RDA standards
  • Awareness/familiarity with existing and emerging metadata standards and schemes, such as RDF, XML, Dublin Core, linked data, and BIBFRAME.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience cataloging manuscripts, archives, or other special collections materials.
  • Experience creating, reviewing and editing of metadata for digital collections.
  • Awareness/familiarity with existing and emerging metadata standards and schemes, such as RDF, XML, Dublin Core, linked data, and BIBFRAME.
  • Understanding of PCC Programs (BIBCO, CONSER,SACO) and/or NACO authorization.
  • Experience/familiarity with ALMA Library Management System.
