Description

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide comprehensive care to patients at risk for or diagnosed with lung cancer. Additionally, work clinical with the Thoracic Surgeon.


Examples of Duties

Service 40%

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, including medical history, smoking status, and other risk factor assessment for lung cancer.
  • Order and interpret low-dose CT scans and other relevant imaging studies as needed.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for patients, including screening schedules and follow-up care.
  • Coordinate care and follow-up with family medicine practitioners to ensure comprehensive patient care, and facilitate referrals to specialists, such as pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, or oncologists, as necessary.
  • Work with CT Thoracic surgeon in regards to patient care and management. Inpatient and outpatient clinics
Research 40%
  • Ensure compliance with clinic protocols, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR). Document Lung Cancer Screening as per CMS guidelines
  • Collect, document, and maintain accurate data related to patient demographics, screening eligibility, screening results, referrals, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Ensure the integrity and confidentiality of research data in compliance with ethical standards and regulatory requirements.
Administration 10%
  • Collect research data using electronic medical records and use REDCap research databases for data entry.
  • Ensure patient adherence to screening procedures and research related activities
  • Should be able to identify and document correct billing codes for LDCT screening and follow-up visits.
Teaching/Education 10%
  • Provides patient and family education based on assessed need regarding the diagnosis, treatment, protocols and diagnostic testing in the area of thoracic surgery.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients and families about lung cancer prevention, smoking cessation, and treatment options. Educate patients and families about lung cancer risk factors, screening guidelines, and the importance of early detection. Promote smoking cessation and other healthy lifestyle choices
  • Teaches patients and family members on necessary post-op care and necessary prevention activities.
  • Provides and participates in professional educational activities related to cardiothoracic surgery patients.
  • Completes annual training and competencies.



Qualifications

  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
  • Successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program or physician assistant program Passing score on national certifying examination
  • Licensed in the State of Illinois (or eligible for licensure)
