Position Highlights The position, Mechanical Design Specialist will work with Mechanical Group of the Optical Engineering Fabrication Facility (OEFF), in the University of Arizona James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences. The position will support projects and cutting-edge research in the field of opto-mechanics related to astronomy and aerospace. Work includes support design and development of optical systems, fabrication and testing of large aspheric optical surfaces, integration and control, and test and verification.

Job duties require the candidate to be in-person on campus.

Federal regulations require that the incumbent be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or have another protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) to be ITAR/EAR compliant.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical design concepts. Perform mechanical design of parts and systems meeting mechanical and optical performance.
  • Generate drawing packages for manufacturing, including GD & T. (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Generate detailed Assembly, Integration and Test Plans. Create technical documents such as reports, slides and plan. Support design reviews such as CoDR, PDR and CDR.
  • Work with vendors to manufacture parts, sub-systems and systems per requirements and management.
  • Provide practical hands-on skills in a lab environment.
    Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Skills in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of, and skilled in generating mechanical design and drawing of parts, assemblies and systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 or ISO1101.
  • Knowledge of, and skilled in SolidWorks CAD is required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum assistance or general supervision within the constraints of the design, test objectives, and schedule is an advantage.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in mechanical design and drafting is preferred.
  • Five years or more of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with optics and optomechanics is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with product data management systems such as SolidWorks PDM is preferred.
  • Previous experience with mechanical inspection tools such as CMM, vernier calipers, micrometer, indicator, vee block, height gage, block gage is an advantage.
