Position Summary
Primary Purpose of the Position

Given this context, WSSU is pleased to conduct a national search for the Founding Dean of its new College of Business and Entrepreneurship. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the Chief Administrative Officer of the College and is charged with articulating a vision and mission for the academic unit aligned with the strategic direction of the university. The dean is responsible for overseeing the academic budget, academic leadership, external relations, and administration of the College. The dean forges strong relationships with university constituents and with external constituents such as donors, alumni, and the business community in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and the Piedmont Triad region.
The dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship must be a visionary, relationship-oriented collaborative thought leader with a demonstrated commitment to holistic student success, research excellence, faculty and staff development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Compelling candidates must demonstrate successful experience managing personnel in complex academic units and managing financial budgets. Additionally, the incoming dean must have experience with curriculum development and implementation, institutional or discipline-specific accreditation, and fundraising or grant writing. This opportunity presents a unique opportunity for a progressive, forward-thinking leader who has experience building and managing diverse teams who can envision the future and position the College to drive socioeconomic mobility on the campus and within the community.
Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree from a regionally accredited university.
  • An academic record of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and engagement appropriate for appointment as a full professor with tenure in an academic unit within the College of Business and Entrepreneurship.
  • With five to ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education as a department chairperson, assistant dean, associate dean, or related administrator position.
  • Previous experience leading an academic unit to successful AACSB accreditation or AACSB accreditation reaffirmation.
  • Demonstrable experience managing fiscal resources particularly for academic units at a four-year institution of higher education.
  • Proven experience engaging internal and external constituencies to raise funding that supports student success, employee development, and innovative initiatives or programs.
  • Experience working collaboratively with leadership of other academic units to achieve a mission or outcome.
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence fostering and impacting student success and academic excellence.
  • A commitment to shared governance and a consultative leadership style.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have a Ph.D. or terminal degree and at least 10 cumulative years of higher experience as a department chairperson, assistant dean, associate dean, or related administrator position.
  • Experience managing an organization or unit with culturally diverse personnel.
  • Experience working effectively in multicultural communities.
  • Knowledge of national trends in higher education business.
  • Experience with SACSCOC accreditation standards.
  • Experience with graduate education and online delivery modalities

Duties and Responsibilities
The Dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship must consistently demonstrate and exhibit the following competencies:
Leadership and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external constituents to articulate a vision and mission of the College that aligns with the UNC System 2022-27 Strategic Plan and the WSSU 2030 Unleash the Genius strategic plan.
  • Manage a strategic planning process for the College that promotes the outcomes of the institution's strategic plan.
  • Manage in a strategic and responsible manner the College's budget including state appropriations, private gifts, sponsored research, and revenue programs.
  • Provide internal leadership and mentorship to department chairs, program coordinators, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Exhibit mastery of institutional policies, state regulation, and federal laws to which the College must comply.
  • Provide oversight of the recruitment, appointment, review, and professional development of faculty and staff.
  • Foster an environment of innovation, collegiality, collaboration, inclusivity, and support where faculty, staff, and students thrive.
  • Provide leadership and support for the Center for Entrepreneurship, the Small Business and Technology Development Center, the Center for the Study of Economic Mobility, the Enterprise Center, and the S.G. Atkins Community Development Corporation.

Undergraduate and Graduate Student Success

  • Provide oversight on course offering, faculty instructional assignments, and strategic employment of adjunct and part-time instructors.
  • Engage in ongoing data analysis of performance outcomes (e.g., student retention rates, course-level DFW rates, four-year completion rates) to initiate continuous improvement.
  • Foster partnerships with Student Affairs, Human Resources, and other support service areas to improve the intellectual, mental, physical, and emotional health of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of the Graduate College, the Graduate Council, and other constituents to grow graduate student enrollment and to support graduate student professionalization.
  • Improve College operations and protocols that support the holistic student experience and academic excellence.
  • Form a Student Advisory Board that provides input and perspective on the College's vision, mission, curriculum, student engagement, and student development.

Research and Scholarly Productivity

  • Establish a vision for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research within the College.
  • Develop knowledge of faculty expertise and skills to build teams that promote interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research.
  • Partner with Sponsored Research, Information Technology, and other units to integrate cutting-edge technology that promotes research, scholarly activity, and innovation among faculty and students at the institution.
  • Deep knowledge of and experience with research and scholarly activity among faculty, graduate candidates, and undergraduate students.

Fundraising and Advancement Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement and the WSSU Foundation to maintain and cultivate relationships with alumni and friends to secure financial resources through development efforts and initiatives.
  • Identify, attract, and manage strategically private gifts and other financial resources for the College.
  • Engage business and industry partners in innovative partnerships that support student scholarships, learner growth, faculty development, and facilities upgrades.
  • Create environments for alumni, donors, and external partners to engage faculty and students to learn more about the College and funding opportunities.
  • Form a Business Advisory Board with representatives from national business and industry organizations that supports the College's vision.
  • Construct and manage an Alumni Board of Advisors that supports the College's strategic outcomes.
  • Foster and support relationships with the state and regional business community that encourage and support business and economic outreach activities.
