Job Summary:

The Assistant Manager, Accounting - Premium Taxes & Assessments will lead a team responsible for completing 750+ premium tax and assessment filings annually. This role will also involve managing and reviewing premium tax journal entries, reconciliations, and handling boards, bureaus, and premium tax true-up provisions within reinsurance contracts. The Assistant Manager will provide crucial support with NAIC statutory schedules to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Manage and oversee the preparation and filing of 750+ premium tax and assessment filings on an annual basis, ensuring accuracy and compliance with state regulations.
  • Lead a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, support, and performance management to ensure timely and accurate filings.
  • Review and approve premium tax and assessment filings and requests.
  • Review premium tax related journal entries and reconciliations monthly.
  • Oversee the handling of boards, bureaus, and premium tax true-up provisions associated with reinsurance contracts.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with premium tax obligations.
  • Provide assistance in preparing and reviewing NAIC statutory schedules to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Stay updated on state and federal premium tax regulations, ensuring the company's compliance with all applicable laws.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in premium tax filings and reconciliations.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for premium tax-related inquiries from internal departments and external auditors.
  • Assist in audits, preparing responses, and providing documentation as needed.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and understanding of statutory accounting principles.
  • Strong knowledge of premium tax laws and regulations.
  • Experience with NAIC statutory reporting and reinsurance contract provisions is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic with a drive to succeed. High level of initiative and motivation. Proactive self-starter with a bias toward teamwork.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines. Desire to embrace flexibility in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Intermediate to expert level proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)


Experience and Education:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required. Master's Degree preferred.


  • Six years experience in corporate and/or public accounting or finance roles required; prior statutory/premium tax experience preferred.


  • CPA preferred.
  • Prior accounting management experience preferred.
