Primary Purpose of Department
The College of Science is a collaborative community dedicated to advancing science through discovery and innovation, teaching and mentoring, engagement with local and global communities, entrepreneurship and increasing access to opportunities for students, faculty and staff. We promote success by connecting with and supporting all students in their exploration of science and mathematics to create an inquisitive, scientifically literate society.
Primary Purpose of Position
Provide accurate academic advising to students with a major or minor in the College of Science as well as to any student who is interested in pursuing a major or minor in the college.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The primary role academic advisor is primarily an implementer of a developmental advising model that involves a tailored series of interactions and communications using advising tools and systems designed to address the specific needs of the students served by the College of Science. This tailored, developmental approach acknowledges that individual student profiles and those of student cohorts may differ not only at the onset of the student academic experience, but throughout their academic career. The advisor must have the experience, education, and background necessary to serve the educational function of an advisor, however he or she is doing so in a context developed by the College of Science and in collaboration with other departmental colleagues and the College of Science Director of Advising. Specific functional areas include:

  • Academic advising
  • Orientation and outreach
  • Targeted advising
  • Instruction (if part of position responsibilities)
  • Oversight of College of Science peer mentoring initiatives
  • Other duties which may include evaluation of transfer course equivalencies and dissemination of advising updates to faculty in the COS departments

Minimum Education/Experience
Candidate must have completed a Master's degree. Candidate must have at least two or more years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting as well as organizing groups of students for specific tasks. Candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff and faculty is required. A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and the Google suite of applications) is necessary.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Two or more years of advising experience after the attainment of the Master's degree is preferred.
  • A working knowledge of Banner and the Student Success Collaborative/EAB is a plus.
  • Experience teaching a freshman seminar or a student success seminar is also preferred.
  • Experience managing large caseloads of students is a must.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating peer mentoring initiatives.
  • Experience with Microsoft and Google Suite (intermittent level preferred).
  • Strong organizational, prioritizing and multitasking skills.
  • Strong attention to details is essential.
