The Rail Manager is responsible for the overall management of internal rail operations. This includes coordinating the internal movement of trains, securing loaded material, managing staff, developing work processes and procedures, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and overseeing maintenance activities. The role requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills to effectively manage a complex transportation system. This position will be located at our Axis, Alabama site. Schedule: Monday- Friday 6am-3pm. On-call as needed. Rail Manager Responsibilities
- Coordinate the scheduling and movement of trains to optimize efficiency and meet our customer's demands.
- Oversee the rail car securing processes to insure optimization, and customer satisfaction.
- Manage a team of 40 employees including rail strappers, rail operators, and weigh masters. Provide leadership, training, and support to ensure performance targets are met.
- Enforce housekeeping along with safety regulations and protocols to prevent accidents and/or personal injuries. Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.
- Oversee the maintenance of rail infrastructure, including tracks, signals, and rolling stock. Schedule routine inspections and repairs to minimize downtime and ensure reliability.
- Develop and manage budgets for operating expenses, capital investments, and maintenance projects. Monitor expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Stay informed about industry standards and best practices.
- Address customer inquiries, complaints, and service issues in a timely and professional manner. Work to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty.
- Participate in long-term planning and decision-making to improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of rail operations. Identify opportunities for expansion or improvement.
- Prepare regular reports on key performance metrics, such as on-time performance, safety incidents, and maintenance activities. Present findings to management and stakeholders.
Rail Manager Qualifications and Skills
- 5 or more years of experience in a management or supervisory role.
- Knowledge of railroad operations, safety regulations, and industry best practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, make decisions under pressure, and solve problems creatively.
- Proficiency in computer software and systems used in rail management, such as scheduling software and maintenance tracking systems.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Drug screening and physical required.
