What your job will be like:

Are you an engineer looking for an exciting new opportunity to work in support of groundbreaking science? Come join our team! The Experimental Nuclear Physics Division at Jefferson lab is seeking an engineer to perform professional level technical work in areas such as mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, electrical engineering, magnet design, cryogenics, vacuum, PLC controls and other related engineering areas. You will be responsible for performing research and development in engineering principles by utilizing basic or theoretical principles and creative analytical techniques typically acquired in academic studies. As a member of the project team, you will be responsible for remaining abreast of technical advancements and be proactive in applying effective, cost efficient and best practices to execute processes.

In this role you will...


  • Perform as the design engineer on components and systems employed in Hall C's experimental setups such as cryogenics, thermodynamics, electromagnets, support structures, superconducting and restive magnets, detectors, vacuum and pressure systems, PLCs controls and ES&H design
  • Work with other engineers, scientists and technicians in defining requirements, designing, analyzing, fabricating, installing, testing and commissioning components or systems
  • Analyze structural and thermal aspects of designs using engineering calculations and FEA tools such as ANSYS, NX, OPERA, MAXWELL, etc
  • Design components and assemblies in a 3D CAD tool such as Siemens NX. Produce or check drawings for fabrication of those designs
  • Support procurement and fabrication of components and assemblies
  • Document work in analysis reports, test reports, and technical notes. Present results at internal reviews, and appropriate technical conferences
  • Be on call 24/7 on a rotation basis (1 week duration) for experimental support


Qualifications we require:

Education:



    * Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering

    Experience:


    • 4 years of relevant experience

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


    • A strong analytical and numerical background
    • Experience with engineering analysis tools such as FEA software and/or OPERA/TOSCA-3D multi-physics magnetic analysis
    • Ability to communicate clearly in writing(e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings) and explain work to their supervisor and others in the group, and work effectively with peers

    Qualifications we prefer:


    • Familiarity with basic fabrication, welding techniques and ASME BPVC Sect VIII.
    • Professional Engineer License
    • ANSYS FEA package, static and dynamic, Linear and nonlinear, FLUENT for thermodynamic and flow calculations
