Job Summary

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of services for patients cared for by the Medical Center at UCSF and its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to: drug procurement, storage, and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, clinical research, and public and clinical service.

Under the Department of Pharmaceutical Services, the [Inpatient/Acute Care Services Per Diem Pharmacist] provides pharmaceutical care to patients at all acute care pharmacy locations within the UCSF Health System. They may also be asked to participate in pharmaceutical care in other sectors of the Department of Pharmaceutical Services as needed. The [Inpatient/Acute Care Services Per Diem Pharmacist] performs a wide range of pharmaceutical care functions to assure that drugs prescribed for and used by patients are safe and effective. These include, for example, obtaining medication histories, reviewing, and assessing medication profiles, providing drug information to patients and health care providers, collaborating with clinicians on drugs of choice and therapeutic plans, ensuring access to medications, educating patients on the proper use of medications, and ensuring that patients understand cautions, adverse reactions, and interactions related to their therapy.

Additionally, under supervision, Inpatient/Acute Care Services Per Diem Pharmacists are engaged in many duties required to maintain an efficient and secure pharmacy distribution system. These duties include purchasing, storing, securing, evaluating quality of dispensing, compounding, and furnishing medications and devices in various settings. Inpatient/Acute Care Services Per Diem Pharmacists may also assist in the oversight of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy student interns, pharmacy residents, and colleagues in their daily responsibilities.

However, Inpatient/Acute Care Services Per Diem Pharmacists do not have formal supervisory responsibilities, nor do they have primary or consistent responsibility for pharmacy students in clerkships. They have no overall management responsibility for specific organized pharmacy programs but may have designated responsibility for limited components of the drug-use control operation. Incumbents spend the majority of annualized work time in functions related to basic drug-use control and pharmaceutical care.

This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations depending on operational needs, as applicable.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $104.79 - $104.79 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965. Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.

Required Qualifications


  • Must have graduated from an accredited school of pharmacy and possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) or equivalent degree as determined by the National Board of Pharmacy. For graduates in a non-US country or jurisdiction, pharmacists must have earned a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) Certification as determined by the National Board of Pharmacy

Preferred Qualifications


  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD)
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, or at least 3 years of inpatient/acute care services pharmacy experience
  • Hold an advanced practice board certification (e.g., Board of Pharmacy Specialty certificates, AAHIVP, etc.)
  • Experience participating in pediatric and adult emergency situations

License/Certification


  • Active license to practice Pharmacy in the State of California; must be in good standing with the California State Board of Pharmacy
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
