The Department of Psychology at Rutgers University-Newark anticipates hiring a data scientist at the assistant professor (tenure track) level to start September 2025. Multiple research areas of data science are welcomed, particularly with a focus on applying AI/Deep Learning or complex psychological models that find patterns or structure in very large datasets to the study of brain, behavior, affect, or cognition. Research areas are open and could encompass foci as diverse as computational cognitive neuroscience, predictive analysis of individual differences, lifespan changepoint dynamics, or the social science of marginalized communities. This position requires a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline such as psychology, neuroscience, computer science, or statistics. Applicants should demonstrate promise of becoming an outstanding scholar with research programs that can be supported by external funding, excellence in teaching through advancing and supporting initiatives that deepen pedagogical knowledge and sustain motivated learning in all students, and the ability to provide research mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory.

This recruitment is part of the Institute for Data, Research and Innovation Science ( IDRIS), which will serve as an organizing hub for applied, social justice-oriented, ethical and responsible scholarship and practice in data science and technology at Rutgers University-Newark. IDRIS's mission is to use data and technology to interrogate and address wicked problems (e.g., health inequities, environmental injustice, over-policing, and incarceration) facing urban communities. In its effort to achieve this aim, the institute will situate data science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other technologies in an ethical, equity-focused, community-engaged framework that meaningfully accounts for human diversity and the complexities of urbanicity. The focus on the interplay between data, technology, ethics, social justice, social good, and anchor-driven urban-solutions distinguishes IDRIS from other data science centers.
