Mercantile Library

Job Description

This is a full-time position involving shift work with variable hours depending on the academic year, including evenings, weekends and significant public contact.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

  • Ensure the safety of the patrons and contents of the St. Louis Mercantile Library and the Thomas Jefferson Library.
  • Protect the collections from damage and theft. Provide a courteous and assertive presence to promote safety within the Libraries.
  • This position requires reliability, variable hours, including evenings and weekends.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Complete regular patrols of designated areas and enforce building regulations.
  • Monitor security equipment and be the primary person responsible for opening and closing the building.
  • Patron service, such as directing people to appropriate library staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Report writing as needed.

  • Provide a first response to emergency situations; serve as liaison to police or emergency personnel responding to emergency situations within the building.
  • Provide security during library events
  • Identify and report potential security/building/maintenance problems.
  • Duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Security Officer's license through St. Louis County is required.
  • Must be able to maintain a friendly and professional demeanor, to communicate clearly and courteously with patrons, library staff and members of the University community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, such as Outlook, Word, Teams, etc.
  • Ability to tolerate a lot of walking, including multiple flights of stairs
  • At least one year experience as a security officer, law enforcement, or related field.
  • At least one year of customer service experience.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Pay commensurate with education and experience.
Hiring Range: $14.27-16.16 per hour
Grade: GGS-004
