Position Highlights The laboratory of Dr. Michael Fallon of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix is seeking highly motivated candidates for a Researcher/Scientist III position. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to NIH-funded research focused on chronic liver disease, particularly the pulmonary and cardiovascular complications associated with it. The successful candidate will have a strong background in biomedical sciences, with specific expertise in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and in vivo rodent models. Experience in designing, organizing, managing, and conducting research in a laboratory setting is essential.

The Researcher/Scientist III will support various research activities, including performing laboratory techniques utilizing tissues and cultured cells, maintaining mouse colonies, and performing in animal surgeries and procedures. This position involves analyzing data and research hypotheses using controlled investigations, experiments and/or trials for research on chronic liver disease using mouse models with a goal toward translating basic science findings to clinically viable potential therapeutics. The candidate should be detail-oriented, conscientious, and capable of following complex instructions. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory experiments at a highly independent level under the guidance of senior researchers or principal investigators. Formulate research methods, and develop or collaborate in the development of new techniques, methods, and equipment. Recommend solutions for research methodology by interpreting principles and analyzing data and complex facts. The experimental procedures include but not limited to:

    - qRT-PCR/PCR
    - SDS Page
    - Immunoblotting
    - Histological tissue preparations and imaging
    - Immunocytofluorescence staning and analysis of tissue and cells samples
    - ELISA and multiplex assay
    - Flow-cytometry
    - Cell culture
  • Maintain rodent colonies and perform in vivo experiments utilizing various liver fibrosis rodent models at a highly independent level under the guidance of senior researchers or principal investigators. Review and edit animal protocols to ensure coherence, completeness, and consistency. The procedures include but not limited to:

    - Small animal handling, mouse breeding, and blood and tissue collection
    - Performing in animal surgeries, injections, intervention studies, and function evaluation procedures
    - Monitor and care animals during the study periods, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    - Prepare samples, reagents, and equipment for experiments, ensuring proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Participate in the writing and supporting documents and figures preparation for publications, presentations and grant proposals.
  • Guide the work of others and/or provides guidance to a specialized laboratory or research area and train students and lower-level staff.
  • Record experimental data meticulously.
  • Attend weekly group-meetings and regularly present weekly progress on results.
  • Manage of lab safety and approval protocols.
  • Coordinate laboratory work, including lab equipments.
  • Additional laboratory duties related to research as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of coordinating experiments, and completing analysis, statistics, and interpretation.
  • Skilled in manuscript writing and preparation for publication.
  • Ability to participate at scientific conferences and present findings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications * A Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular/cell biology or a related field, master's degree is preferred.

* Minimum of 2 years of experience performing the following biological techniques:

o molecular biology, expression construct design, preparation and use

o histochemistry

o qRT-PCR

o immunoblotting

o immunocytofluorescence and related microscopy

o cell culture for testing expression construct function

o rodent handling, procedures, surgeries
