JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine (Associate Program Director) supports the Chair of the Division of Post Graduate Medicine in the overall management of the internal medicine residency training program, including the mentoring and career counseling of residents, as well as accreditation management, and curriculum and program development. The Associate Program Director will be responsible for providing clinical care to patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings of Cook County Health.

Typical Duties



  • * Supports the Program Director in the organization, implementation, and supervision of all aspects of the training program.
  • * Provides clinical care to patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • * Participates in the recruitment and selections of residents for appointment to the program including onboarding and orientation.
  • * Maintains program accreditation and ensure compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) regulations.
  • * Participates in the Promotions Committee, Clinical Competency Committee and Program Evaluation Committee.
  • * Prepares educational goals and objectives of the program with respect to the ACGME competencies of residents at each level of training and for each major assignment.
  • * Ensures house staff compliance with institutional requirements.
  • * Designs, prepares and implements curriculum, policies and procedures to ensure resident clinical performance and development.
  • * Sets policies and oversee performance evaluation, system of discipline, reprimand, mentoring, advancement and dismissal process for house staff.
  • * Implements programs of scholarly activity and quality improvement in medical education;
  • * Oversees and assists in creating housestaff schedules.
  • * Coaches, mentors, and provides career counseling to housestaff regarding long-term career planning.
  • * Assists with fellowship and job placement by writing letters of recommendation and serving as a phone reference.
  • * Manages faculty, staff, or patient complaints regarding resident physicians.
  • * Oversees, supervises, and mentors Chief Residents of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
  • * Manages and supervises post-graduate office and staff.
  • * Provides onsite coverage for the Program Director, as needed.
  • * Maintains an active clinical load of at least 60%.
  • * Performs all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • * Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree or foreign equivalent
  • * Completion of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Internal Medicine residency
  • * Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
  • * Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
  • * Board certification in Internal Medicine
  • * Three (3) years of work experience after residency training as a practicing physician, clinician educator, and/or clinician researcher
  • * One (1) year of participation as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program



Preferred Qualifications



  • * Prior experience in Internal Medicine curriculum development
  • * Prior experience as an Associate Program Director or Program Director
  • * Prior managerial or supervisory experience
  • * Three (3) years of experience as Core Faculty



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics



  • * Strong knowledge of ACGME core competencies, Residency Review Committee-Internal Medicine (RRC-IM) accreditation processes, National Residency Match Program (NRMP) policies, and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification policies and procedures
  • * Strong knowledge of education theory and methodology
  • * Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
  • * Skilled in the practice of general internal medicine
  • * Skilled in medical education and curricular development
  • * Ability to mentor and develop medical professionals
  • * Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • * Ability to respond with promptness and dedication to periodic emergency requests
  • * Ability to prioritize, plan, and organize projects and tasks
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
