The Detroitoffice of SmithGroupis looking for aStructural Engineer DCto join our team. SmithGroup has been named one of Southeast Michigan's Top Workplaces by the Detroit Free Press for10 consecutive years!

Working with us, you will:



  • Perform structural analysis, design and documentation of buildings, site structures, architectural features and complex projects involving interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Develop structural designs for structures of various materials that experience multiple loading conditions that could include extreme loading (high wind, heavy snow, high seismic, blast, progressive collapse, etc.)
  • Create and develop innovative planning and design concepts for projects.
  • Assess design requirements, determine level of effort and provide input on scheduling.
  • Revise, review, and coordinate construction documents (drawings and specifications) to meet project requirements.
  • Assist with construction administration including site visits as required for observation, answering contractor questions, or representing the owner in reviewing completed work.
  • Prepare presentation drawings, assist in developing proposal materials and participate in presentations both internally and externally.
  • Coordinate the work of CAD/Structural techs, interns and junior staff assigned to the project.
  • Mentor and train junior staff.
  • Assist in the development of design and detailing standards, tools, and specifications.



An ideal candidate has:



  • A bachelor's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering or equivalent. A master's degree in Structural or Architectural Engineering is preferred.
  • 5-14 years of structural and civil engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) required.Structural Engineer (SE) licensure preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with team members in other disciplines, consultants, and clients.
  • A working knowledge of the design and construction process, project administration and administration procedures.
  • Proficiency with CAD, Revit, RAM Structural Systems, RISA, SAP and/or similar Structural Analysis Programs and the Microsoft Office Suite.
