The House Supervisor directs and coordinates nursing administrative services on weekends, holidays and/or shift. Promotes the concepts of clinical nursing management and interdisciplinary care delivery. Promotes patient satisfaction, utilizing the principles of the Pride in Caring Program. Works with staff and other health care professionals to optimize patient outcomes and customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a House Supervisor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Manages human and material resources efficiently and prioritizes needs.
- Analyzes staffing levels and adjusts nursing staff resources based upon patient volume variability, acuity, staff competency, and available support staff.
- Coordinates bed control in collaboration with nurse manager, assistant nurse manager and/or designee for timely patient movement and placement throughout the facility, nursing units and transfers to other facilities. Prioritizes multiple demands for appropriate bed placement.
- Obtains necessary supplies and equipment as needed.
- Monitors specialty equipment utilization for appropriateness of use, discontinuation and accurate charging processes.
- Supervises nursing staff on the delivery of nursing services to patients in respective divisions on designated shift.
- Acts as clinical resource person in the delivery of patient care during designated shifts. Provides support and direction to staff, oversights new orientees and resources needed related to equipment, staff, and pharmacy-related issues.
- Participates and evaluates nursing performance and communicates findings to nursing administration/nurse managers.
- Collaborates and analyzes staff levels in relation to patient acuity and intervenes accordingly.
- Coordinates/initiates the on-call system for surgical cases on weekends and holidays.
- Responsible for administrative functions on shift/weekends, confers with administrator-on-call as needed.
- Communicates with appropriate resource persons, department supervisors, as indicated, to ensure continuous operations.
- Performs delegated duties of other departments when departments are closed; i.e., Central Supply Medical Records and Pharmacy on designed shift.
- Communicates appropriately to the medical examiner and Organ Sharing Network on all patient deaths.
- Responds effectively to all emergencies/codes, takes appropriate action, follow-up and documentation.
- Demonstrates leadership in decision-making and problem-solving processes, addresses patient, family and nursing concerns in an effective manner.
- Pride in Caring concerns, service recovery and physician-related issues are resolved on shift and, if needed, referred to nursing administration for follow-up.
- Maintains professional communication and fosters positive interpersonal relationships with staff, physicians, visitors and students/faculty.
- Participates in performance and quality improvement activities to ensure compliance and positive quality/safe patient care outcomes.
- Responsible for monitoring functions, completes and forwards data reports as assigned (i.e., Code Blue Critique form, CHF Discharge instruction sheet, Incident/Accident Report).
- Provides care of patient valuables after business hours. Ensures patient valuables are placed in drop-in safe and recorded in Valuables Log (Admitting).
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of an approved school of nursing
- BS in Nursing
- Four years+ medical-surgical and critical care nursing experience.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- IV, CPR, and critical care certifications preferred
- Two years of administrative or supervisory expertise preferred
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License
