Job Summary
The Head of Access Services is responsible for supervising and leading the operations of the Access Services department involving staff, systems and stacks, as well as ensuring effective day-to-day functions and ongoing development of the department in order to provide access to the library's resources and services. This position oversees course and textbook reserves, circulation, interlibrary loan, physical collections management, building facilities, and equipment lending.

Essential Functions

  • Leads the daily onsite frontline operations of the library, providing essential services and ensuring access to library collections and spaces for all hours of business.
  • Ensures smooth operation of department functions by hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising staff.
  • Manages activities and staffing related to ILL/document delivery, circulation, stack maintenance, study rooms, and the textbook and course reserves collection.
  • Manages work schedules to ensure adequate staffing and coverage during all hours of operation.
  • Establishes regular meeting schedule with individual staff members; schedule group meetings as needed.
  • Provides continuous feedback, recognition of accomplishments, and monitors progress of goals; conducts annual performance reviews and works with staff to establish annual goals.
  • Manages administrative settings in integrated library system (Alma) including circulation calendars, lending policy profiles, departmental permissions, working with university IT to ensure accurate and up-to-date loading of profiles, and system notifications, and communicate settings appropriately.
  • Manages the department's budget, including the student employee budget, as well as financial records including student payroll, administration of fines/replacement fees and problem accounts.
  • Manages building access issues and hours, updates community on changes, and serves as first point of contact for reporting library facilities and safety issues to library administration or campus offices for follow-up and resolution.
  • Compiles data, manages reporting statistics for circulation/ILL, gate and seat counts, and prepares reports; makes data-driven recommendations for improvements in policies and services.
  • Works closely with other library department heads and Library Director to develop policies and procedures that support the University and library's missions.
  • Develops, plans, and implements new methods of service delivery or service enhancements in support of the curricular and research needs of the University community.
  • Works with the Head of Technical Services to provide local support, training, and system administration for I-Share system.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of short- and long-term projects and actively participates in library committees and task forces.

Minimum Qualifications


  • ALA accredited MLS/MLIS (received or in progress).
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience relevant to the position with a history of progressively knowledgeable/responsible experience.

  • Demonstrated supervision experience; ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.
  • Commitment to creating a climate that ensures high-quality patron interactions as well as ongoing evaluation and improvement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of two or more core public services functions (circulation, document delivery, interlibrary loan, stacks maintenance, reserves).
  • Demonstrated familiarity with integrated library systems and technology.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse population.
  • Deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and an understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce and student body bring to a campus culture.

Preferred Qualifications
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move object.
