What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you a passionate leader and looking for your next exciting opportunity? We want you to join our team as the Manager of Safety and Health Engineering at Sandia National Laboratories. In this position, you will support the implementation of Sandia's Worker Safety and Health (WSHP) program to enable safe and effective execution of Sandia's national security mission.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Partner with organizations throughout the Laboratories to understand the mission needs and provide safety and health expertise and resources to enable mission success.

  • Develop, implement, and sustain Sandia's Worker Safety and Health Program (WSHP) and Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) to support mission needs, reduce worker injuries and illnesses, and meet Department of Energy (DOE) regulatory requirements. This encompasses a wide range of program areas, including electrical safety, control of hazardous energy, construction safety, ergonomics, thermal stress, hidden hazards, underwater diving, and industrial hygiene, among others.

  • Innovate and implement solutions to support continual improvement of Sandia's safety culture, organizational performance, talent development, inclusion and diversity, and mission execution.

  • Develop communications in support of labs-wide initiatives delivering products for worker safety and health campaigns.

  • Ensure day-to-day operations of the Safety and Health Engineering 1 Department are in alignment with the mission objective and are compliant, efficient, and effective.

  • Develop and manage measures and metrics, monitoring programs, key performance indicators, and assessment programs to ensure that directorate goals are attained.

  • Integrate and collaborate with other ES&H Managers, matrixed Business Partners, and other key stakeholders; and provide support to Senior Management in alignment with the vision, mission, and strategic objectives necessary to meet current and future mission needs and growth.

  • Promote a transparent and strong relationship with the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Sandia Field Office, and other government agencies and regulators.

  • Advise Senior Management on government legislation, Department of Energy (DOE) contractual compliance requirements, and SNL's policies and procedures.



Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$127,900 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study (e.g., Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Toxicology, Occupational Safety, etc.) or a closely related STEM field, plus (10) or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience/relevant knowledge with safety and health related regulations, programs, and activities (e.g., industrial hygiene, safety engineering, occupational safety, chemical safety, construction safety).

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Demonstrated experience leading high visibility projects or initiatives.

  • A minimum of (5) years of demonstrated management and/or leadership experience.

  • Master's Degree in related STEM field of study (e.g., Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Toxicology, Occupational Safety, etc.)

  • ES&H Professional Certifications (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Safety Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Professional Engineer).

  • Proven ability in establishing trust-based and effective relationships with staff, stakeholders, regulatory oversight, and all levels of leadership.

  • Experience establishing and sustaining a compliant DOE 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Programs or Program Elements (e.g., industrial hygiene, safety engineering, occupational safety, chemical safety, construction safety)

  • Knowledge of the NNSA mission, programs, capabilities, and unique hazards or like experience at other national laboratories or sites.

  • Existing relationships with other Labs, sites, or plants throughout the DOE/NNSA Enterprise and/or other communities of practice or working groups.

  • Experience in accident investigations, casual analysis, or other related processes.

  • Demonstrated experience interfacing and collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders to include senior-level Labs and federal leadership, and local, state, and federal agencies.

  • Demonstrated effective oral, analytical, written, and communications skills through practical experience providing presentations or briefings to senior/executive-level management or other relevant public speaking experience.

  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.



About Our Team:

The Safety and Health Engineering 1 Department (04623) is the steward of Sandia's Corporate Worker Safety and Health Programs, which include electrical safety, control of hazardous energy, construction safety, ergonomics, thermal stress, hidden hazards, underwater diving, and industrial hygiene, among others. Our mission is to partner with Sandia's line organizations to provide safety and health expertise and services that enable the safe execution of Sandia's national security mission. Our team comprises world-class safety and health professionals who maintain knowledge of current regulatory requirements, possess experience in technically challenging operations, and manage occupational safety and health risks for the corporation. We are committed to quality and continuous improvement and are determined to make a significant, positive impact on the safety culture at the Laboratories.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
