Primary Purpose of the Position
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education ( CASE), the Associate Dean of Educator Preparation and Quality Assurance is responsible for leading, organizing, and managing operations associated with the university's Educator Preparation Program ( EPP). This administrator serves as the liaison between the dean's office and the Educator Preparation Programs, including Elementary Education, Health and Physical Education, Sport Studies, and the Master of Art in Teaching programs. Additionally, this administrator must work collaboratively with faculty and staff to develop strategies that promote community engagement, primarily in partner P-12 schools in the immediate geographic region (e.g., Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Guilford County Schools, Stokes County Schools, Davidson County Schools, Thomasville City Schools, and so forth). The Associate Dean provides leadership in accreditation, assessment, and program quality in all areas supervised. The Associate Dean also responds to inquiries from department chairs, educational institutions, the community, students, and external agencies; furthermore, the Associate Dean supervises academic, professional, classified, technical, support, and student staff.

The Associate Dean is responsible for designing and executing a quality assurance system for the Educator Preparation Program. The Associate Dean works closely with the Dean to ensure all EPP degree programs meet the standards of the Council of Accreditation of Educator Preparation ( CAEP); thus, the Associate Dean must collaborate with department chairs, program coordinators, and faculty to articulate clearly Program Level Outcomes and Student Learning Outcomes for every academic degree program. Additionally, the Associate Dean must work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students in the EPP to articulate a clear program evaluation plan that assesses the outcomes of each academic degree program that prompts documented continuous improvement. The Associate Dean must work cooperatively with the Associate Provost of Academic Strategy and Institutional Effectiveness, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Research, the University College, and other critical offices to manage and leverage student success data, student intern and student teacher performance data, faculty productivity outcome data, and other academic-related data (e.g., Praxis scores, edTPA scores).

The successful candidate must have the following minimum required qualifications:

  • Must possess a terminal degree in one of the supervised disciplines from a regionally accredited four-year institution of higher education
  • Must possess an academic record of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate for appointment in a WSSU academic unit in the Educator Preparation Program at a minimum rank of Associate Professor with tenure
  • Must possess at least three years of formal administrative experience in a four-year institution of higher education as a department chairperson, assistant dean, or associate dean in an Educator Preparation Program
  • Demonstrated evidence of leading or supporting institutional or academic discipline degree program accreditation reviews
  • Must demonstrate a proven record in data-driven decision-making
  • Evidence of proficiency with various technological tools that impact student engagement, faculty and staff development, and business operations

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience with extramural grant procurement and managing sponsored research
  • A commitment to shared governance and a consultative leadership style

The Associate Dean for Educator Preparation and Quality Assurance has responsibility for the following activities within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education:

Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Department Chairs and Enrollment Management to increase student enrollment across all Educator Preparation Program degree programs
  • Represent the institution's Educator Preparation Programs at the UNC Dean's Council or other education initiatives sponsored by the UNC System
  • Serve as the university's designated representative to communicate with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI)
  • Review and monitor course enrollments across the assigned discipline areas within the College to consider course additions, cancellations, or revisions
  • Collaborate with department chairs to ensure that the workload within the academic units are equitable and aligned with the university's policy

Curriculum and Academic Planning Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Dean, academic department chairs, and program coordinators to enhance academic degree programs based on current and emerging educational and K-12 workforce needs
  • Provide leadership to ensure that P-12 public school partners engage in the design, conceptualization, execution, and evaluation of academic degree program curricula and course development
  • Provide academic program review oversight and assistance to department chairs
  • Provide review and approval of graduate and undergraduate curricula actions within the assigned discipline areas prior to moving to Academic Standards and Curriculum Committee or Graduate Council

Quality Assurance Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty within the Educator Preparation Program and within P-12 public schools to design, conceptualize, and execute a quality assurance system that systemically drives the collection, analysis, and dissemination of assessment data to facilitate programmatic continuous improvement
  • Serve as the Chairperson of the Professional Education Committee (PEC) which provides governance and oversight of all educator preparation degree programs
  • Work with the Associate Provost of Academic Strategy and Institutional Effectiveness, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Research, and other pertinent offices to provide professional development on CAEP standards for academic department chairs, faculty, staff, and students
  • Participate in convenings sponsored by CAEP, NCDPI, and NCACTE to stay abreast of accreditation standards
  • Provide leadership of and consultation to academic department chairs and program coordinators on using continuous improvement data to update undergraduate and degree curricula and revise courses within curricula

  • Work collaboratively with faculty in CASBE and the EPP to initiate, execute, and assess P-12 school-based internships and student teaching experiences
  • Initiate partnerships between the EPP and P-12 schools to pursue extramural grant funding that supports the recruitment, enrollment, preparation, and retention of candidates in teacher preparation programs
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for community-based activity that improves the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of students in the teacher preparation program
  • Facilitate collaborative partnerships between the department chairs and University College to increase undergraduate student persistence, retention, and completion rates
  • Engage community, state, and federal agencies and organizations to expand the EPP's footprint
