As our Attorney Trainer / Mentor you will work with leaders of the office while providing support to our dependency unit. You will have an opportunity to provide guidance and work on strategy with dependency attorneys who are preparing for trial as well as mentor and guide new attorneys in our unit. You will also be counted on to develop and present training both within our office and to outside stakeholders. This will all be accomplished while carrying a reduced caseload providing high quality legal representation to our clients.

Please Note: This position will carry a reduced caseload, primarily Dependency Appeals but may also include direct parent representation.

We Require

  • Five years of experience as a practicing attorney

  • Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited and American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school

  • License to practice law and a member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona, applications will be accepted from candidates who have passed the Arizona State Bar examination, or those transferring UBE scores, and are awaiting admission to the bar, but such candidates cannot be hired until admitted

Job Contributions

  • Provides guidance and strategy on trial preparation and litigation of cases where attorneys are seeking assistance

  • Works with new attorney hires to supplement the onboarding process created by the division supervisor

  • Gives guidance and reviews motions and special actions

  • Identifies substantial case issues; tracks and supports the challenging of the issues

  • Seeks out and develops relationships with experts in the areas that affects our practice

  • Develops and presents CLE qualified training, including but not limited to In Defense Of Parents (IDOP), within and outside of the office

  • Monitors legislation impacting the area of dependency; collaborates with others in the office and other PDS offices to draft a response, if needed

  • Collaborates with other PDS offices to ensure litigation that crosses over between offices is seamless

  • Provides feedback to dependency attorney supervisors regarding any observations and opportunities for improvement noticed when working with dependency trial attorneys

  • Maintains a limited caseload

  • Supervises dependency interns /externs/clerks

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office environment in close physical proximity with others

  • Public contact and overtime/rotating shifts may be a common occurrence

  • Position is exposed to traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.) and features interruptions, time pressures, high volumes of work, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, frequently changing tasks, accuracy, decision making, concentration, vigilance, and teamwork

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Ability to lift 15-25 pounds from floor to waist; 15 pounds waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead, carry 15-25 pounds a distance of 100 feet and push/pull 100 pounds a distance of 100 feet
