POSITION SUMMARY

A Registered Professional Nurse accountable for the coordination and delivery of quality patient care, based on age, in Surgical Services department, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the pre-operative - operative - & post-operative periods of patient care. He/She shall perform nursing functions in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of the Nursing Services. Perform other duties as directed by manager of Surgical Services.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assesses plans, implements, and evaluates care and needs of each patient specifically related to age.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and aseptic environment for patients and others in the Surgical Services Department. Is patient advocate and monitors maintenance of the sterile field, sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
  • Prepares rooms and instruments for the day's procedures, and acts as circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse during operative procedures.
  • Provides a written assessment of the patient on admission and updates continuously during their surgical procedure.
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner. Maintains and respects all patient related information (confidentiality).
  • Assists Anesthetist as directed by Anesthetist.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions and side effects.
  • Pre-operative visit and or phone call with patient/family to assess patient, plan care, patient teaching. Pre-operative teaching is completed at this visit.
  • Responsible for accuracy in the electronic medical record (EMR), Performance Improvement studies, surgical logs, and surgical charges.
  • Provides accurate care and handling of all specimens and cultures.
  • Positions patients safely; pads and protects bony prominences.
  • Preps and drapes patients correctly for all procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of arterial lines, central lines, spinal and epidural catheters and how to document appropriately.
  • Reviews Surgery Schedule for accuracy, provides schedules to appropriate departments, and coordinates surgery unit routines, as directed by manager.
  • Communicates lab/imaging services reports to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • Assists with surgical procedure in circulating duties and occasionally as a scrub nurse on procedures if indicated.
  • Gives thorough report of patient's intra-operative condition to PACU nurse.
  • Assists in development of Post-Op education with regard to age utilizing all available resources.
  • Implements nursing plan of care based on physician orders and nursing diagnosis with regard to age in accordance with established Policies and Procedures and safety precautions.
  • Is self-directed with personal and learning needs on an ongoing basis. Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means.
  • Ability, skills, and knowledge to evaluate, observe, care and counsel patients, and administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist.
  • Demonstrates integrity, dependability and resourcefulness, demonstrates enthusiasm for work.
  • Assists with Bedside and or Radiology Procedures as indicated.
  • Takes case assignment as directed by the Surgical Services Manager.
  • Meets dress code standards; adheres to policy on "Dress Code/Surgical Attire".
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Attends 80% of staff meetings; reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Meets physical demands of the job.
  • Takes call duty, performs proficiently while on call.
  • Reports to work as scheduled, ready to receive assignment. Minimal absenteeism.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs; changes to meet personal learning needs.
  • Is responsible and accountable to the Manager of Surgical and Post Anesthesia Care Services for maintaining current CPR, ACLS, and PALS certification as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Surgical Services Department, Illinois Nursing Act, Hospital and Nursing Policies and Procedures.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation and teaching of the staff.
  • Strives for quality in patient care and as necessary challenges and/or corrects errors of peers to ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Participates in and supports research programs and activities and performance improvement activities; also participates in nursing committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care. Has attended 20 hours of continuing education to maintain RN Licensure.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all surgical equipment.
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment assigned to patient care and reports problems and or orders services as needed.
  • Directs and assists in maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments.
  • Maintains mandatory educational requirements based on TJC CMS, IDPH, State, and OSHA requirements.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned



Education

  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • BLS Certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • PALS certification required.



Experience

  • Minimum of one year work experience in the operating room preferred.
  • Needs to be effective communicator/good communication skills with good organizational skills.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure.
  • Basic computer knowledge.



Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Able to work under pressure and relate to hospital staff and visitors.
  • Frequently exposed to a variety of work hazards (disease, needle sticks, body fluids, etc.).
  • Physical demands are moderate to heavy.
  • Frequent patient positioning and lifting up to 35 pounds.
  • Requires long periods of standing at times.
  • Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  • Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent lifting and/or handling of light weight items.
  • Frequent repositioning of patients.
  • Ability to perform CPR - a strenuous activity.
