Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The purpose of Chilled Water Systems (
CWS) is to produce and distribute chilled water for approximately 155 buildings located at the main campus and two (2) satellite campuses in a cost effective, efficient and reliable manner. Chilled water is produced in two ways. One is by an extensive chilled water generating system - the single, virtual chilled water plant, comprised of four (4) networked chiller plants that are operated as a single virtual system and the second is by stand-alone chillers that are building specific. Additionally, Chilled Water Systems provides electric and steam load balance for Cogeneration Systems.

Position Summary |
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,944 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,472 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,472 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all auxiliary equipment supporting the chilled water systems. This includes the maintenance and repair and installation of the auxiliary pumping system components.
The primary purpose of this position is the preventive maintenance and repair of the auxiliary pumping systems of the 4 Centralized Chilled Water Plants, 4 outlying Chilled Water Plants, 6 Stand-alone Chillers and Chilled Water Interfaces of over 160 University buildings which consist of the pumps/motors and piping to continually update these systems to be functioning Interfaces with
BTU meters. This position is assigned to assist/lead with any or all Chilled Water, Compressed Air, Steam piping repair and piping modifications to the chilled water system that is implemented in the Centralized Chilled Water Plants, Stand-alone chillers and chilled water bridge interface in Campus building that Chilled Water Dept. serves. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires certification(s). |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
Working knowledge of large centrifugal water pumps operation. Working knowledge of large air compressors operation.
Working knowledge of the pipe fitting/welding trade. Working knowledge of water filtering systems. The ability to troubleshoot and repair auxiliary equipment that is used in district cooling systems.
Position is an Emergency Duty Position; (
CDME) Communicable Disease Mandatory Employee and subject to Medical Surveillance Program. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Ability to handle multiple, moderately complex assignments; ability to make daily inspections of all central Chiller plants, stand-alone and bridge system equipment; ability to keep supervisor and operators up to date on status of equipment; ability to identify problems, determine possible solutions and take necessary actions to resolve issues; demonstrates commitment to safety; ability to organize the execution of the pump, motor and auxiliary equipment preventative maintenance program for chilled water interface systems of campus bridges, as well as those of stand-alone units and the chiller plants; ability to implement tools to rebuild pumps and motors; ability to maintain and repair pumps, motors and auxiliary equipment for chilled water interface systems of campus bridges as well as those of stand-alone units and the chiller plants to ensure long and trouble-free service; ability to perform pump/motor alignment procedures with state-of-the-art laser alignment equipment to ensure that couplers, bearings, and seals have long service lives. Ability to use pipe fitting related tools. Ability to install piping for chilled water and auxiliary system. Ability to use proper welding method to perform pipe and structural steel welding tasks. Ability to move heavy components using proper rigging methods. |

Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
This position requires bending, stooping, climbing/working from high ladders/scaffolding, working on hands and knees, working with arms and hands above head for long periods of time, working in hot dusty conditions to cold and wet conditions and working with large heavy pieces of equipment. Be able to lift, carry objects 60 lbs.
Assignments are normally received in the form of written or verbal work orders, which usually indicate the general nature of the task or describe the nature of the problem. New or unusual assignments may be accompanied by more detailed instructions. Work is performed under general supervision and may be reviewed and inspected in progress or upon completion. |

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
