The University of Virginia Department of Drama seeks a full-time, 12-month Props Supervisor and Artisan. This position reports to the Technical Director and supervises the budgeting, procurement, and construction of properties, furniture and scenic elements as determined by the Technical Director. Additional responsibilities include supervising student and professional staff in properties construction and the organization of props storage. The Props Supervisor is one of seven full-time production staff who collaborate with faculty, students, and guest artists on academic-year performances in the Drama Department and the summer season of the Virginia Theatre Festival. The Department of Drama offers academic and practical theatre training in a liberal arts context, encompassing dance, design, performance, performance studies, playwriting, production, and technology. The Virginia Theatre Festival offers a summer program of professional theater and community engagement, as well as workshops and other events during the academic year. Department and Festival both use the facilities of the UVA Drama Building, which includes three theatres, classrooms, studio space, and shops. A Bachelor's degree in theatre or related field and minimum of one year of professional experience are required. Qualifications include: experience supervising professional and/or student staff; be able to prioritize and execute tasks accurately in a fast-paced work environment; possess excellent organizational skills; be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and professional theatre artists; be able to read, analyze, and interpret procedures and regulations specific to technical theatre and props supervision; and be committed to a safe and equitable work environment. Preferred experience: budgeting and procurement; carpentry, painting, furniture building and modification, upholstery, crafts, and metal work skills appropriate to props and scenic construction; development of safety documents. The expected salary for this position $28.00 - $29.00 hourly (annualized $58,000 - $60,000), commensurate with experience and qualifications.This is a non-exempt level, benefitted position. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Bachelor's degree in theatre or related field. Experience: One year experience in technical theatre. Licensure: Safety training knowledge, certificate preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
