The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Animal Facility Operations, the Assistant Supervisor assists the Supervisor in providing direction for the day-to-day operation for the care of laboratory animals housed in the animal facility. This is accomplished via morning meetings with the husbandry staff and meetings with the Director of Animal Facility Operations to discuss staffing needs for the facility as dictated by operational needs. The main emphasis will be on providing service to the investigators and their staff, continuing education of the husbandry staff, oversight of maintenance requirements of the facility and compliance with federal, state, local and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines. The Assistant Supervisor must exercise leadership, good judgment and professionalism at all times when interacting with the research community and/or ICM personnel. Scheduling, monitoring, and supervising the animal husbandry and sanitation duties of about 15 technicians to ensure program and facility compliance with established laws, regulations, and guidelines. Individual must possess strong written and verbal communications with interpersonal skills. Sound working knowledge of biohazardous containment, husbandry practices, regulatory and compliance standards. Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse environment with an active role in employee development. Dedication to facilitating good research while ensuring compliance with federal state, city, and University regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities



  • Schedule, monitor and supervise the animal husbandry and sanitation duties of husbandry technicians to ensure program and facility compliance with established laws, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Provide training for new hires with associated documentation of training and progress to assist in decisions of retention or dismissal.
  • Initiate, conduct, document and monitor progressive discipline (when necessary) in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Maintain and verify the accuracy of employee time sheets for biweekly payroll production.
  • Act as a facilitator of research by providing expertise to facility users in the areas of husbandry techniques and related resources.
  • Position is a Saturday to Wednesday work week schedule.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, training, and experience, plus two years of experience in a laboratory animal facility.
  • Certification at the AALAS LATg level preferred.
