The Office of Medical Education (

Job Duties |
Brody School of Medicine Distinction Track Program is searching for a Director of Research Distinction Track in Medical Education. This is an "Internal Posting", open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine, and will be a part-time (.10
FTE/10%) reassignment of time for a Brody School of Medicine faculty member.
The
RDT allows students to pursue clinical, basic science and/or translational research to characterize the mechanisms of diseases and discover new therapies to improve health. The Director will run the Distinction Track's 8-week summer immersion program, Summer Scholars Research Program (
SSRP). Following completion of
SSRP, interested students will apply and be selected to participate in the full longitudinal
RDT. Graduates from this program are better prepared for careers as clinician scientists and will have also undergone leadership training teaching them to work well with and mentor others. Participants who successfully complete the entirety of the longitudinal
RDT will graduate medical school with a Distinction in Research.
Duties will include:
1. Develop and innovative curricula specific to the
RDT curriculum. This includes the Summer Scholars Research Program (
SSRP, the 8-week summer immersion program), M2, M3 and M4 progress meetings for students selected for the
RDT, and the M4 capstone course.
2. Participate in
RDT application, interview, and selection process.
3. Assist in identifying mentors for the
SSRP and
RDT program summer research and longitudinal research projects and facilitate this interaction as needed.
4. Assist other faculty and staff with the planning and implementation of the annual Medical Student Scholarship Day.
5. Establish measurable goals and objectives for each program year (
SSRP, M2, M3, M4, and Capstone).
6. Identify and evaluate materials that support the curriculum such as learning experiences, assignments, reading materials, videos, or online resources.
7. Recruit and develop faculty for delivery, facilitating, and/or precepting educational content as needed.
8. Collaborate with other DT program leadership and administration to plan and implement annual events (i.e. Medical Student Scholarship Forum, Interest Meeting, Orientation, Capstone).
9. Provide oversight of the course site within the
BSOM learning management system (
LMS) to ensure content is complete and consistent with the
ECC approved
LCME Compliant
LMS Template and made available in a timely fashion to students.
10. Assess student performance and provide formative feedback related to their performance and participation in the Research Distinction Track.
11. Lead regularly scheduled student progress meetings.
12. Develop and track programmatic outcomes linked to program objectives.
13. Monitor status of each research project assigned to students while providing continuous and timely feedback to student about research design and outcomes and identify alternative research options if their initial project assignment requires an alternative plan for any reason.
14. Implement routine evaluation measures to ensure educational quality improvement standards and respond to student feedback.
15. Collaborate with other distinction track leaders and administration to design and implement common educational sessions and policies related to the Brody School of Medicine Distinction Tracks.
16. Attend all required distinction track leadership retreats and meetings - including any meetings required to decide on potential dismissal of students from the distinction track program as per the current standard operating procedure.
17. Assist in the facilitation and implementation of Distinction Track program recruitment (i.e. Interest Meeting).
18. Advise students in professional/career/longitudinal project development.
19. Provide continuous feedback to students by grading assignments and reports in a timely manner.
20. Complete student elective course evaluations to confirm students are meeting the expectations.
21. Compile annual programmatic reports that include requested data include the following: publications submitted with student involvement related to
SSRP and
RDT; conferences and meetings where this work was presented; database of all
SSRP and
RDT participants, their projects and their mentors.
22. Provide continued guidance to students and faculty mentors on acquiring all regulatory approvals for proposed projects, gaining access to the electronic health record and to research spaces
23. Provide assistance and support to mentors for developing Institutional Review Board (
IRB) submission as needed for each student-faculty pairing
24. Monitor status of each research project assigned to students and identify alternative research options if their initial project assignment requires an alternative plan for any reason.

Minimum Education/Experience |
-Current Brody School of Medicine Faculty member.
-MD, DO, or PhD from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for
ECFMG Certification
-For MD/DO - NC Medical license; board certified in appropriate discipline; teaching experience in a clinical academic setting
-Demonstrable research experience including practical understanding of:
IRB submission; developing a clinical research question; effective searching and critical appraisal of the medical literature; basic statistical analysis; writing and submitting research abstracts and manuscripts and presenting research results |
