POSITION TITLE: Research Programmer II

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Andersen Lab at The Scripps Research Institute is working on diverse projects using computational genomics approaches and high-throughput experiments to study and identify emerging viruses. We are seeking a research programmer to develop data processing pipelines for genomic and epidemiological data, and build a real-time surveillance platform for viral outbreaks, including the ongoing outbreak of H5N1 in dairy cattle. REQUIREMENTS:



  • Bachelor's degree in computational biology, Computer Science, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. A degree in a biological or chemical science may be accepted if applicable to the science developed/performed in the individual lab.
  • Minimum of two years' experience with one or more programming languages such as Python, C, C++, Java or Javascript is required.
  • An advanced degree in a field directly related to the science developed/performed may be accepted in lieu of some experience (e.g., Master's degree in lieu of 2 years' experience or Ph.D. in lieu of 3 years' experience), depending upon the individual lab.


PREFERRED SKILLSET:



  • Knowledge of database systems such as ElasticSearch, SQLite, or PostgreSQL is preferred.
  • Experience with applying and/or developing bioinformatic methods is strongly preferred.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • This position works in an office or laboratory environment.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $66,560 to $78,000, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
